Hi
Anyone got any recommendations for horror type books for years 5 and 6. Apparently goosebumps are not scary enough.

Thanks

Playing Beatie Bow by Ruth Park is a ghost/time story that's nicely spooky. The Little Vampire perhaps, by Angela Sommer-Bodenberg, although might be too lighthearted for him?

How about the Cirque du Freak books by Darren Shan? My son loved those when he was that sort of age. He also loved the Skullduggery Pleasant books by Derek Landy.

The ghost of Thomas Kempe? Or ‘the dark is rising’ series?

The Haunting of Aveline Jones is pretty spooky and much darker than my dd was expecting. She enjoyed The Invasion of Crooked Oak, The Vanishing Trick and Room 13.

Room 101

My DD enjoyed Coraline in year 5.

At that age I read all of the goosebumps books and then moved on to Point Horror! I’ve got my child second hand ones online. There are loads to choose from.

The Point Horror books.
You'd have to probably get them secondhand but I think a few have been republished.

Spooksville?

Plumbernightmare · 24/02/2026 09:46

My Y5 DD loved The Hunger Games - but would depend on the maturity of the reader.

The Clackity series by Lora Senf. Jennifer Killick books are great. Nightbooks by JA White and it's sequel. Darren Shan books are excellent (my son's fave author) but can be quite violent. The Small Spaces Quartet by Katherine Arden. Anything by Steve Voake, you might need to get them second hand but my son was obsessed. The Bite Risk series by SJ Wills. The Nest by Kenneth Oppel. Only if you Dare short stories by Josh Allen. Anthony Horowitz does some good horror books (he does others as well but has a horror series). Short story collections by Chris Priestley. Then you've got dystopian series' such as The Enemy series by Charlie Higson. Dogs of the Deadlands is so good. Or dark fantasy such as the Michelle Paver Wolf Brother series.

I LOVED Point Horror!

Uncle Philips Tales of Terror and I think the Black ship - there are 3 books in the set and the ghost stories in them are brilliant, even for older teens!

I remember reading Room 13 in year 6 and being scared. I then moved on to Point Horror (think you can get them second hand) and on to Stephen King when I was about 13.

I also loved a book of short stories called Ghosts and Journeys by Robert Westall (I think). The one about the girl’s toilet really scared me.

City of Ember is also quite dark, dystopian with underlying secrets.
