Biff and Chip books for older readers

Hello, my son is 6 and really enjoys reading Biff and Chip books, although he has grown out of the level 6 books we have.

I've ordered the 18 book set of the 'time chronicles' for him, but are there any other biff and chip books that are at a higher reading level than level 6? I've tried researching it, but I just keep getting ads for lower level books or items from temu.

Thanks!

They stop after time chronicles. FYI, my 7 year old was upset by some of the content in them, and they’re not particularly sensitive. Approach with caution Smile

Ooh okay thank you for the warning, I will have to have a quick read through them before I give them to him 🙈

The time chronicles stories are great. I am wondering what parts your child found upsetting?

Casperroonie · 11/02/2026 19:17

At 6 they should be moving on to chapter books.

Not necessarily? A love of reading comes from being able to choose what to read, and enjoying it. If that's a graphic novel, the same book read 5 times or a book aimed at earlier ages, who cares?

Is this your first child? I’m still traumatised by the repetition and monotony of Biff and Chip, and my youngest child is now 14 🤣. That bloody magic key!!!!

in terms of your question, the Time Chronicles books were around for my younger two kids. They enjoyed these to an extent but did find them a bit boring compared to other books at a similar level.

Children should read what they want. I’m an adult and some times I read worthy books, some time I read trashy chick lit, Harry Potter or magazines.

I know it's not what you asked but he might be ready to try something like the Tom Gates series? Relatable everyday family dramas with lots of humour. They're thick books but don't be put off by that, they're full of doodles and for both my DC they were perfect to bridge the gap from picture books to chapter books when they were around 6, and both re-read them to around 10.

I don’t remember now, I just remember the tears and nightmares!

Luckily his school does a different reading scheme so didn't use Biff and Chip, these are just what he enjoyed reading in his own time. I don't like them cos I can never remember who is who, and constantly think the dog is called Kipper 😵‍💫🤣

On the basis at level 2 I seem to remember there is a horse that gets drunk, I'm not surprised some of the other books are considered inappropriate.

I just googled and saw there’s racism in one book and references to cottaging in another!

I hope DNephew 7 doesn’t read them!

Totally. But B and C books are for beginners and have limited themes. There are better books for phonics learning with up to date decoding methods than older books, with far more interesting content. Depends if the child is reading them for fun or for learning to read.

Cottaging? No there isn't.

The OP says he enjoys the books.
