J. Wilson - The Suitcase Kid - good for a 9yo?

Just wondering has anyone read this with a 9yo or perhaps has a 9yo who's read it him/herself?

I have it, and we've read a few Jacqueline Wilson books but this one has a theme (splitting parents, new partners, new babies, etc etc) which I feel might be too close to home - should we go for it, am I babying my DS?

I am suspecting I am going to get answers saying I am babying him. I think I know I am.

I will post anyway!

Only you can say if there are personal reasons why this might be too close to home. If your ds is currently very upset over a divorce or a new baby, then obviously it might come across as a bit insensitive if you give him the book. Though then again, it might be a starting point for talk. Hard to tell really, not knowing your personal circumstances or what your ds is like.

I don't think it's a book that is too worrying in itself for a mature 9yo; it has quite a happy ending, as J Wilson's books go and the reading age would seem about right. Dd read it at about that age.

Thanks for replying cory. I do feel that the issues are close to home because I am having a new baby in a new relationship. However, my DS has an excellent relationship with his father, as do I, so he does have a strong background against which to read the book. I suppose in general I am against "issues" books, but I do think Jacqueline Wilson is superb.
