to read at bedtime. She's always had 2 books read to her, until now the 'That's not my...' & hungry caterpillar or something similar did fine. But i feel she could handle something a bit longer, as these take about 5 mins to read & she's starting to get bored and ask for more!!
Have got a couple of Charlie & Lola (they seem just about the right length) & have bought her The Gruffalo series for her birthday in July, but fancy a trip to Waterstone's tomorrow to stock up on newbies. Any ideas??? TIA x

Eric Carle has a whole range of books going further than the hungry caterpillar which are also good

My girls both love Apple Tree Farm Range by usborne books

dreamygirl · 30/05/2008 12:42

My top recommendations for that age are anything by Judith Kerr - all the Mog books, "The Tiger who came to Tea" and "The Other Goose" are all favourites in our house.
Also have you seen any of the ones by Oliver Jeffers? We have "How to catch a star" and "Lost and Found" and my DD2 loves both of those. The illustrations are in an odd style of drawing but the stories are original and turn out happily.

There's also the Hairy MacLary ones and Mr Bear by Debi Gliori are lovely I think. My ds also love the Kipper ones too!

MuffinMclay · 30/05/2008 13:11

Another vote for Hairy M (although some are rather brief), and Kipper - Kipper's Year and Kipper's A to Z are very popular here.

We're Going on a Bear Hunt - gets very annoying though (I hide it to stop ds choosing it ).

Thomas the Tank Engine and Dig, Dig, Digging are favourites, but maybe that is a boy thing.

Mr Men? Dr Seuss?

PrimulaVeris · 30/05/2008 13:13

Duck in the Truck series by Jez Alborough

MuffinMclay · 30/05/2008 13:14

Each Peach Pear Plum? Not very long, in terms of pages and words, but lots to talk about and find on each page. Ds1 loves pointing out all incidenta details in the pictures.

nailpolish · 30/05/2008 13:15

Ruby Flew Too is my dd2's favourite

she also likes The Tiger Came to Tea and the Katie Morag stories (by Mairi Hedderwick)

legalalien · 30/05/2008 13:35

A Lion in the Meadow (my childhood favourite and very popular with DS)

The Little Yellow Digger - this one rhymes / scans nicely - at least it does if you have a kiwi accent like me!

caspercat · 30/05/2008 13:35

Oooh, lots of lovely suggestions! Thankyou so much, will jot them down & spend, spend, spend (within limits!!).
Any more ideas still gratefully received xx

Bears in the Night - used to be my favourite as a child, think I might have to buy a copy!

Anna8888 · 30/05/2008 13:37

All the "Olivia" books were very popular with my daughter at around 2.

Kindersurprise · 30/05/2008 13:43

Check out the other books by the writer/illustrator of the Gruffalo books. Our DCs love The Snail and the Whale. They also enjoyed The Gruffallo's Child.

A fab book that someone on here recommended is the Puffin book of first poems. It is our DCs favourite book.

George and the Dragon is another firm favourite.

And another vote for Hairy Mclary

legalalien · 30/05/2008 13:43

And this was DH's favourite, apparently

The Digging-est Dog

Also a big Tiger who Came to Tea Fan. And anything by Julia Donaldson as they "read nicely". I hate books that don't quite rhyme / scan when you read them aloud.

Kindersurprise · 30/05/2008 13:45

And Stellaluna is on my list when we go to UK next month. I saw it in German recently and it was lovely, it made me cry.

legalalien · 30/05/2008 13:46

Oscar and Arabella and Ormsby

GrimmaTheNome · 30/05/2008 13:47

Brambley Hedge. DD liked those from that age and I think she still reads them herself at 9 so good value! The illustrations are wonderful.

MsDemeanor · 30/05/2008 13:50

My children also still liked flap books too. Hide and Seek Pig by Julia Donaldson and Axel thingy who did the Gruffalo is good and all the others in the same series - look on Amazon

MuffinMclay · 30/05/2008 14:36

Martin Waddell - Owl Babies, Farmer Duck

DixiePixie · 30/05/2008 15:02

We love the Janet and Allan Ahlberg books here. Real classics and beautifully illustrated with lots of opportunities for little ones to spot and name things.

"Each Peach, Pear, Plum" has already been suggested. There's also "Peepo", which I find gorgeous to read.

"The Baby Catalogue" by the Ahlbergs is great too - it's not a story - but lots of lovely pictures to name and discuss, and keeps DD occupied for ages.

As well as the Ahlberg books, 22 m.o. DD's absolute favourite book right now is "Night Monkey, Day Monkey" by Julia Donaldson.

YoGabbaGabba · 30/05/2008 15:06

Oliver Jeffers books - How to Catch a Star, Lost and Found. Debbie Gliori - Tell me Something Happy Before I go to Sleep. Harry Horse - Little Rabbit series. Jill Murphy - Peace at Last. Also, take a look at Red House book site - free delivery on all books.

stringbean · 30/05/2008 15:33

I'm a fan of the Alfie books by Shirley Hughes - both ds and dd loved these - simple stories about a little boy and his little sister Annie Rose, and beautifully illustrated. Also 'Dogger' by the same author.

mymblemummy · 31/05/2008 01:51

More votes for Judith Kerr's Mog series and The Tiger Who Came to Tea, and Hairy McClary too.
Also Jan Pienkowski's Meg and Mog series, the Ahlbergs' Jolly Postman series, Pumpkin Soup (sorry, can't remember author but it is a brilliant picture book) and Harry the Dirty Dog (name gone again).
