Horror books for 12 year old boy?

I struggle to find books my 12 year old son will enjoy. His favourite currently are the Adam Kay series and he's read his 3 books twice through. Can anyone recommend another author like Adam Kay? His non-fiction style?

He is really into horror (films & TV) in general too. Are there any teen horror books that anyone can recommend? Not kiddie horror as he won't go for that. I'm hoping I can engage him with some books for teens to spike his interest in reading.

Would the Point Horror ones be too young?

BunnyRuddington · 20/07/2025 09:45

Not quite horror but how about Day of the Triffids? Very easy to read so it’s great for reluctant readers.

Point Horror books were great when I was his age. I also really like 'the haunting of Alizabel Cray' which is set in an alternative reality London.

DS11 has recently enjoyed the dread wood books by Jennifer Killick, which are thriller/horror, though it’s worth mentioning I can’t recall if he’s read an Adam Kay book yet.

I used to absolute love these books! I think the fact it just has Horror in the title could sway it.

The Enemy series Charlie Higson.

MrsForest · 20/07/2025 09:55

At that age I was reading James Herbert

NerrSnerr · 20/07/2025 09:55

I was about his age when I started reading Stephen King. I started with Misery.

Cotswoldmama · 20/07/2025 10:00

Not horror but some creepy weird stories in the Paul Jennings books (he wrote the stories for the TV show 'round the twist') my boys love the books they all have 'un' in the title.

Jurassic Park! Much less fluffy than the films. Ds loves it.

He's just done the woman in black at school and he has really enjoyed it.

I loved the Pan horror books at 12

DoAWheelie · 20/07/2025 10:21

Animorphs! You can download them all for free easily and they are great books. They do get a bit dark but not in a way he won't be able to handle. I read them myself at that age and sometimes revisit them as an adult.

NameChangedOfc · 20/07/2025 10:25

R.L. Stine's "Goosebumps" books. Specifically "The night of the living dummy".

DoAWheelie · 20/07/2025 10:33

Forgot to say - the Darren Shan vampire series is great too. Hold off on his demonata series for another couple of years though!

LivingDeadGirlUK · 20/07/2025 10:58

I also read Stephen king and James Herbert at that age. I think Misery is a good call, also Cujo and firestarter but a lot of kings books have adult themes, there is a really hard to read gang rape scene in bag of bones for example, so at 12 you would want to vet his choice but in a few more years maybe less so, depends on his maturity.

I've always thought James Herbert writes like a teenager and there is much more sexual violence than King. I wouldn't be suggesting him to my son at 12.

Lockwood and co books meant to be good, we really enjoyed the TV series but not read the books.

DoverWight · 20/07/2025 11:50

My son enjoyed Robert Muchamore books

Jessica167353 · 20/07/2025 16:46

Thanks for all the suggestions. Lots of these sound great!

Michael Grant's Gone series is very similar in style to Stephen King but without the graphic sex scenes. I would not let a 12 year old read Stephen King.

I was reading Stephen King and James Herbert at that age but DS loved The Enemy series.

Darren Shan second vote!! The saga of Darren Shan cirque du freak series.
the Demonata series too but pp thinks that might be too scary yet

wobblyweasel · 20/07/2025 19:14

Cirque du Freak series by Darren Shan
Skulduggery Pleasant series by Derek Landy
Maximum Ride series by James Patterson

ExploringDreams · 20/07/2025 19:53

Also came on to say The Enemy series. Ds, isn’t a huge reader, used to stay up til really late with those books.
Stephen King - The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon Not quite horror but creepy and really good and ok for younger readers.
