if you go to the National Gallery they have a v good art book shop with lots of 'introducing art to children' books (well they did when I was there....see if they have an online shop)

mine have an old book called The Art Book for Children (think it is called that?) that's quite good but I wonder whether it might be slightly old for a 5 yr old. You'd need to read it together i think.

LOL

one of the most poncy things my dd EVER said was when we were in a restaurant (she was about 6) and I was looking at a picture and I said how nice it was and she said (VERY loudly) 'I think you'll find it's a Turner mummy because of the dramatic seascape'

(of course repeated verbatim from what the teacher had taught them at school)

Surrealism usually gets them goiung at my school, although they are teenagers of course...I loathe it.

Pop Art is bright and eye catching, as is Philip Caulfield. Archimboldo has some fantastic heads made from leaves and flowers, kids LOVE these (and is is an old 17th century painter. Rousseau, does jungly pictures with tigers and stuff in them.

Have to go dd is bashing computer keys, Will be back with more later...Mondrian....

Oh, and Anthony Gormley, he did all those millions of little figures in a group. Kids love those as well.

Cubism or Escher does some fantastic weird perspective drawings that fascinate for hours trying to work out which way they go.

trail him round some of the galleries in london (mebbe the tate modern and the hayward, sounds like that would be the sort of thing he'll like). It's fun having a child that likes art because you can legitimately go round art galleries and pretend it's for their benefit .

Redhouse books has a set of books Katie & the artists, with free delivery well worth a look. I have them in my classroom and the children love them.

Lucy Micklethwait has done lots of children's books on art - unfortunately a lot of them are out of print, but you might be able to find some through amazon marketplace. The ones on amazon.com are a lot cheaper - might be worth buying from there despite the extra postage.

Arcimboldo

lots of little people My ds loved this when he was 6. Better to see in real life though

escher

There are some here that were recommended by an artist.

Would these be of interest? There is a whole series - we just have the one below which I think features a Jackson Pollock painting - but there's lots more on Amazon.

What sort of format is that artbook inside? Tried to find one in Waterstones to peek but they didn't have any. My boys are 41/2, would it be suitable or is it geared more towards older kids?
