Want to recommend Land of Roar for 9year olds

Been reading Land of Roar series by Jenny McLachlan to my 9 year old and we're really enjoying them. Adventure, humour, interesting characters, great plots and the relationship dynamics and themes (growing up, peer pressures) are plausible and not clunky. Some illustrations too.

Twins about to start high school end up back in the land they created through their imaginary play when younger and have to battle their old adversary, a creepy scarecrow. One is keen to be seen as cool and grown up, her brother feels left behind and still likes to play. The twins are mixed race, although not much is made of it, if anyone has been searching for a book that isn't just more white kid heroes.

Some scary bits but fine for age 8/9/10 unless they scare easily. Or fear scarecrows.

My DC loved this series. I was reading them to my younger son, but my eldest (12 at the time) really enjoyed them too!

Ah brill. Was feeling the weight of people going off my recommendation for a minute there!

All ears for other suggestions too please everyone. It's a funny in between age and the market seems to be saturated with celebrity actors too, which irritates me. Even though most kids have no idea who these celebrities are!

Sam Copeland books are great for this age. Charlie Changes into a Chicken (and the two sequels) plus the Tuccus and Tops series written with Jenny Pearson. Jenny Pearson's other books are also a good read!

My DC also likes the Tom Vaughan Hercules series.

Oh my 9 year old LOVES this series.

i also recommend The Whisperwicks. It’s utterly fabulous (I borrowed it!) and I think has a sequel coming soon.

If you’re looking for lovely books, have a look at Book Bairn on Insta. She reviews loads. All children’s books, across the age ranges.

DS enjoyed that series, from about age 8/9/10. Another top pick is the Podkin One Ear series. Also likes Crookhaven series. And Cogheart series (that one he read to himself age 10) but insisted I read them too and they were good! We've also enjoyed Tuesdays at the Castle.

Oh yes, I forgot about Cogheart! DD really enjoyed them too.

Also Pages & Co. - Tilly and the Bookwanderers:

And - this is an easy read for a 9 year old, but great fun - Scribble Witch: Notes in Class

Ooh, I can't believe I almost forgot DD's favourite - the Frostheart Series. We loved them.

I added that book to a vinted bundle a couple of days ago! What luck.

@SatsumaCat we had to abandon Podkin around the point he becomes one eared because she found it too scary and had nightmares about the animals-turned -to-spiked-metal enemies, and starving sort of brainwashed rabbits. Which does sound quite scary actually, now I've written it down. Maybe it was too well written and seemed too real.

Redwall!

Gardendiary · 31/05/2025 21:20

Interesting - my 9yo didn’t like it and we couldn’t get through it. The scarecrow character is quite unpleasant. I was reading it to her and even as an adult, I didn’t like it, but it’s got great reviews so you are definitely not alone.
We loved Greenwild. I think I liked it as much as she did, it’s absolutely magical.

My DD (only 8, but with a reading age of 13) loves the Land of Roar books.

She also loves the Roman Mystery series (Caroline Lawrence). A sort of cross between the Famous Five and Horrible History. A group of disparate children in the ancient Roman Empire have to work together to solve the crimes. The Thieves of Ostia is the first one - I had to go in in the middle of the night and confiscate the book!
