Books on Healthy Friendships

My DD, 4 years, has been encountering tricky ‘friends’ at pre-school. They have made comments on her body, shoved and also refused to play. My daughter loves to read and I would love recommendations for books that teach about what it means to be a healthy and kind friend. Bonus points for how to handle these situations with healthy boundaries.

I’m sorry to hear that. Try ‘Friendship for Frogs’

Not a book… but I’ve found Bluey is wonderful for teaching my kids (and me!) about tricky stuff… friendships but other things too.
My son has a few characters in his class, with a lot of guidance we’ve encouraged him to gravitate towards friends that are kind to him and make him
feel happy, which he’s taken on board (he’s now 9).
When my 3 children were in reception we did whole class birthday parties. We then sussed out which children we wanted to invite for play dates or meet ups. Encouraging nice friendships out of school hours helped then when in school.

Do you have any Bluey episodes recommendations on friendships in particular? I’d like to watch it alongside her!

Thank you for posting this. My six year old has some tricky "friends" on our street, one is a bit of a mean girl /queen bee type and I can see it's getting him upset and he's starting to think more deeply about what a friend is and how they should make each other feel etc.

I agree Bluey is great in general for the topic of friends and kindness. We love bluey here.

Have a look at the Childline website, search friends. Your child is too little for it now but there is lots of useful stuff that you can use to prompt a discussion (in an age appropriate way) and to build on going forward.

“The girls” is a lovely book about friendship. “Everybody has feelings” is great also. Not sure if these would be worth a look but “Rubys worry” & “The huge bag of worries” are great for teaching little ones about how to talk about their feelings/worries.
