Looking for ideas for a 3 year old

My youngest DN will be three in August. At home they still have a lot of the “That’s Not My” books but DN is moving onto and likes as she calls them “big girl” books. DN likes the Farmyard Tales books, Mog the Cat books and Funny Bones. I did wonder about some of the Ahlberg books but any suggestions welcome.

Is she the youngest as in 'has lots of older siblings' or youngest as in 'only child but has older cousins'? If she's got siblings they've probably got all the classic ones already, so I tend to buy stuff that's been published very recently to avoid duplication. If she doesn't have older siblings then it's a great opportunity to buy all sorts of classics - Julia Donaldson/Axel Sheffler collaborations are popular, and my DS really enjoyed Meg & Mog. We call them 'floppy books' (as opposed to 'board books')!

My absolute favourite book for this age is called ‘I’m sorry’. I’m not sure who it’s by but the story and illustrations are lovely, they almost make me cry!

Julia Donaldson ones are great.

My 3 year old is also loving the mr men and little miss books at the moment, they have some newer ones about things like going to the dentist and being kind/calm.

Take her to the library or to charity shops and let her choose.

Peepo by the Ahlbergs
Monkey and me by Emily Gravett
Brown bear, brown bear … what can you see by Bill Martin Jnr (great for developing speech)

Both of my children loved the above

Thank you all for your suggestions. DN has two older cousins 8 & 5 and an older sister aged 7. My 7 year old DN up until fairly recently didn’t like books though so they don’t have that many books for slightly older children.

I have a series called Roo’s Garden (a total of ten collectible). All about the animals in our (Me and my dog Roo) garden. I’ve had lots a great feedback from parents and teachers (including speech/reading specialists). And also some lovely early rhyme books - Bedtime for Roo and Roo’s A to Z of animals.

My two girls really like 'there's a dragon/monster/unicorn in your book' series by Tom Fletcher (from Busted). Although they're not my favourite to read

We also picked up a book in a gift shop a couple of weeks ago which they read over and over again about a pet tortoise escaping, with a few facts etc. in the back. It's one of those that I like reading, partially because it's not too long!

Found it (Runaway)

My 3 year old enjoys a lot of the traditional fairy tales too - The Works sometimes has versions of them geared towards that age group. The Gingerbread Man, Goldilocks and the 3 Bears etc

Brilka8 · 09/11/2025 00:29

Apologies just realised this is quite an old thread 🙈

Thank you for replying. Christmas is coming soon so it’s always good to get some suggestions for that too.

Have you heard of story-a-day.shop? I discovered it through their free trial and honestly, it's been amazing for my 3-year-old.

The stories are the right length to read in one night, and they come with illustrations. Best bit? They feature your child's name and details, so she's like the main character. My kid absolutely loves that, she even asks me for her stories now 😂

It's not replacing Farmyard Tales and the classics, but it fills the gap perfectly for bedtime. There's a new story every day, so it stays fresh. The free trial is generous enough to see if your kid likes it. If she does, it's cheaper than buying new picture books constantly.
