Dd is in year 7 and loves reading but doesn't know what to move onto.

Her primary school had an amazing and engaging library but sadly her secondary school doesn't, so she never goes.

Please can you share what books your dd enjoyed reading in year 7 and 8?She's open minded in terms of subject and genre.

Murder most Unladylike series
Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging for something light
Holes by Louis Sachar
Anne of Green Gables
A Series of Unfortunate Events

If you have a local public library, she could go on Saturday and talk to a librarian? Alternatively, the school website might have a list of recommended reads? Or even her old primary school website?

I would second Murder most Unladylike series, my DSD loved it at that age. Also the Lucy Worsely historical novels - My Name is Victoria and Eliza Rose.

Disc world - The witch series is good to start with
Sherlock or Enola Holmes

Hunger Games / Divergent / Maze runner is popular with
KS3 as is Alex Rider, Artemis Fowl and Skullduggery.

DD started getting into classics and poetry and playscripts at that age so Christmas Carol, Animal Farm, Lord if the Flies

Remind her that reading needs to be for pleasure as well as gain and it's fine to read books just because she likes them regardless of the age rating.

Dd devoured the Lottie Brooks series. She's going through the Geek Girl series now.

She read and loved all the books by Tamsin Winter a few months ago, also Speechless by Kate Darbi. Not sure what genre these are but she'd enjoy stories along these lines.

Bella Bright Books are great, the authors an old mumsnetter from the days of morning paper and COD..

Leeds2 · 13/12/2024 21:40

Wonder by P(?) Palaccio
The London Eye Mystery by Siobhan Dowd
The Boy In The Goldfish Bowl
The Boy At The Back of the Class
The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas
She might also enjoy the Paddington books, given the recent film release.

Warrior Cats series.
The Hobbit.

PrincessOfPreschool · 13/12/2024 21:51

Noughts and crosses - Malorie Blackman. My DD loved it but quite mature.
Patrick Ness - Chaos walking series. We all loved that across generations and sees. Sort of Sci Fi but not really.

Does she go on Booktok? Need to be a bit careful as some inappropriate stuff there so check it first.

I remember the days! What was her username?

JanFebAndOnwards · 13/12/2024 21:54

Her English teacher should be able to help if there is no school librarian

cheapskatemum · 13/12/2024 22:03

I remember loving "My Family and Other Animals" at that age. I went on to read all of Gerald Durrell's books.

AndMiffyWentToSleep · 13/12/2024 22:06

I agree with previous posters about Wonder (different chapters written from the perspectives of different characters in the book) and Holes is a great story.

I can't remember my user name from 20years ago anyway let alone hers but that would also be outing her which I won't do.
