DS age 9 reads Dogman, Bunny vs monkey, Phoenix magazine, Tintin and Asterix. I cannot get him into anything else! He has read a series of biographies of footballers on the Kindle…

so… what shall I get him for Christmas?

My DS9 likes exactly the same! Has he read any Looshkin (think that's how you spell it!) or Tom Gates? My DCs all also love old Beanos and Dandy!

13 Storey Treehouse seem very well loved by that age group. You can get a good deal on a set of them.

DorotheaHomeAlone · 29/11/2024 22:48

A Phoenix subscription? DD loves getting hers each week and reads it straight away.

Another vote for 13 storey treehouse series.

also captain underpants series which is similar in style to dogman (may be the same writer?).

Tiberius12 · 29/11/2024 23:06

Peng and Spanners is a similar style to Dogman, as is Looshkin.

Peabody25 · 29/11/2024 23:16

Cat Kid (same author as dog man)
Looshkin ( same author as bunny vs monkey)
Tom gates
Diary of a wimpy kid
The investigators (alligator detectives series)
Mr Penguin (penguin detective series)
13 storey treehouse series
Vi Spy
Kid YouTuber
Loki: a bad god's guide

DS is 11 now and still loves all of these.

You can get Alex Rider graphic books

CooksDryMeasure · 30/11/2024 10:43

We’ve already got Phoenix sub, Beano sub, Dogman, Wimpy Kid, Capt Underpants, Tom Gates so I think you’ve thoroughly nailed his tastes, will look at the others!

My daughter’s not yet of the age to even really get Asterix and Tintin yet, but I gave my goddaughter who is eight Rosemary Sutcliffe’s The Eagle of the Ninth, which is old enough my mum introduced me to it as a child, and she liked it enough she’s badgering her parents to take her to Hadrian’s Wall.

I’ll be giving her Geoffrey Toone’s Bows Against the Barons for Christmas.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 03/12/2024 22:32

Loki, Looshkin, Grimwood, Wimpy Kid.

Those treehouse books are painfully repetitive - even my son got sick of it by the second one.

CooksDryMeasure · 05/12/2024 08:34

Ah @SophieStrange i feel we have kindred childhood literature tastes… i have read DS Eagle of the Ninth, we just finished Warrior Scarlet (which might be my favourite RS alongside the Rider of the White Horse), and I’ve just started reading him The Woolpack by Cynthia Harnett. However he wouldn’t read these books himself.

I moved on to graphic novels of classic books like hound of the Baskervilles and Dracula, some of which I found in the library. He really liked them. Graphic novel and audible versions of Alex Rider.
I think mine reads at school far more than he does at home. He’s now 11 and reads more but I had to relax about it a bit. If he’s tired he’ll reread wimpy kid etc.
