Recommended book for 11 year old girl

I would like to get my boyfriend's niece a book for Christmas and wondered what recommendations there are?

My plan was to get her a book about inspirational women, but the one I bought from a charity shop and had a read of refers to children being raped as 'child prostitutes'!!!! So that has gone in the bin!

Possibly something non-fiction, but I am fairly open to suggestions.

Nothing too political....

How about Rad Women Worldwide?

At that age I loved "The Secret Garden" and "A Little Princess" by Frances Hodgson Burnett, as well as "Jane Eyre" and "The Lord of the Rings". I think that good non-fiction for children that age is hard to find and children always know when they're being lectured, so I'd avoid anything too heavy-handedly "inspirational"

One of my children is 11 and her friends are all into Heartstopper series, Geek Girl, Good Girls Guide to Murder series, those sort of books. I’m not sure she’s like a book on inspirational women unless it was someone like a specific footballer or pop star that she admired specifically.

Each to their own. I would have hated Lord of the Rings still do.

Just started reading the land of stories by Chris Colfer to my 8yo as it was highly suggested by a 11yo friend and I would say so far it's great and harmless!

Journey to the river sea, there is a beautiful illustrated 20th anniversary edition

Little women

The Murder Most Unladylike series by Robin Stevens is a big hit here - great stories and strong female characters.

madamehooch · 21/10/2024 18:30

Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah. It's an autobiography written for 10+ about a young girl in modern(ish) China. Sad in places but very readable.

Pennysfarthing · 21/10/2024 18:31

Heartstopper. I wouldn't recommend for an 11 year old tbh.

Lucy strange is brilliant .. the ghost of gosswater is good..also
Emma Carroll is good..
Christopher Edge

You could try penelope lively for modern classic

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 21/10/2024 18:31

What sort of thing is she in to?

The Last Bear by Hannah Gold is all about a polar bear, but also environmental issues and family issues/grief (dead mum). There’s a follow up “finding bear”

A Kind of Spark by Elle McNicol is about a ND girl in Scotland researching local women accused of witchcraft, has been made into a CBBC series recently.

The Murder Most Unladylike series mentioned above is good. Enola Holmes series is also good. (Both strong female lead!)

Katya Balan’s books are also lovely for this age range.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 21/10/2024 18:33

Or if you have a local independent book shop with a decent children’s section - go in and buy a gift voucher.

Oh Katherine Rundell ! I forgot her books! “Impossible Creatures” is lovely and she’s written a few good adventure books.

2nd Katya Balen...I loved " october october "

Also A F Harrold...".the afterwards" is outstanding

DancefloorAcrobatics · 21/10/2024 18:42

This is fabulous! It has a little write up about their achievements plus the artwork is also a little feast for the eyes!
(Obviously you don't need to buy 2nd hand!)

Hatmakers by Tamzin Merchant

The Philip Pullman series that includes the Tiger in the Well

Both of these sets of books have gutsy female leads and transport you somewhere else with brilliant descriptions, tales that have enough edge to them to feel a little more grown up and left me wanting to read the next one.

APurpleSquirrel · 21/10/2024 18:57

I echo the Murder Most Unladylike & Ebola Holmes books.

Or Lightening Mary - about Mary Anning?

APurpleSquirrel · 21/10/2024 18:57

Enola!! Bloody autocorrect!

rhino12345 · 22/10/2024 11:01

These are great suggestions! Thank you so much

Enola!! Bloody autocorrect!

I think Ebola Holmes is like Enola, just a bit more deadly? Grin
