Hello 👋🏽

Instead of endless toys for Christmas etc I want to ask for books for my two (6 B and 3 G)

I also want to add to their book collections as they book love books but I think the ones they have they are bored of now

Can anyone recommend any books of series in particular their 6 year old boy has enjoyed a lot or 3 year old girl or books they could both enjoy?

Thank you! Xx

The favourites in our house-

There's a Monster In My Book
Julia Donaldson (pretty much all)
The Lion inside and other Rachel Bright books (the pandas who promised... is just beautiful)
There's a bear in my chair/ a mouse in my house
Mog books
Six Dinner Sid

Also- for the six year old- read him my naughty little sister stories. My son LOVED it and constantly looked affectionately over at his little sister like he totally understood the authors experiences.

The Boy Who Grew Dragons series is v popular with my DS.
Emma Chichester Clark's series of books about Plum dog are charming.

The worst princess
The day the crayons quit (must do odd voices for each crayon)
Wild
Girls can do anything
Wonkey donkey (but not the other ones in the series, they're awful)

DS is 6 and his favourite books at the moment are the Daisy & The Trouble With... by Kes Grey. They're short chapter books, he reads them himself. He also loves Winnie & Wilbur - depending on your DS' reading level, there's picture books and short chapter books, all of which are good.

We also read him The Faraway Tree which he adored. And DD passed down her Jeremy Strong collection, some of which he likes (My Brother's Famous Bottom series is the main one). She also has the Roald Dahl collection which she graciously shared with him - he read the simpler ones and we read him a couple of the longer ones

For the 3yo, our favourites were always (are still!) Mog, Hairy Maclary, the Oi series, 100 Cats/Dogs/Birds, You Choose (etc), Richard Scarry, and all of the Dr Xargle books.

You can hear a couple of the stories read here. They are perfect for bedtime because they are quite wholesome and each chapter is a self contained short story. I don't think people automatically think of them for boys but my son loved them every bit as much as I used to (I had my own naughty little sister!).

My now 6 year old daughter loved being read Bramley Hedge at 3. We have a lovely 40th anniversary edition which still comes out regularly

Winnie the Witch is still a big hit here. Ds (9) has moved on to the chapter books but I'm not allowed to get rid of the picture books yet.

The Poppy and Sam Apple Tree farm books.

The Faraway Tree and the Wishing Chair books by Enid Blyton.

Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler have a brand new hardback book out, Jonty Gentoo. It's about a penguin who escapes from a zoo and ends up at the North Pile, before eventually finding his way to to South Pole. Perfect for the 3-7 age range. I'd put that top of the list as one they can enjoy together.

David Walliams picture books may appeal to both too. They're quite long, and humorous, so should interest the 6 year old, but being picture books they can also be enjoyed by the 3 year old. Some are duds but I quite like There's a Snake in my School and The Bear Who Went Boo, and his newer one Grannysaurus.

Have you thought about poetry, as being something they could enjoy together? There are loads of gorgeous keepsake poetry books out there which make lovely gifts. I highly recommend 'A Whale of a Time'.

The Roald Dahl colour illustrated books also make wonderful keepsake gifts. A bit young for the 3 year old but definitely something she can grow into, and she might even enjoy snuggling up with you both now as you read them to your 6 year old.

Umbo goes to Welsh Class by Caroline Jackson and illustrated by Scott Keenan . This is my newly published book suitable for three to nine year olds children. Put the book title into Google and you will see that it is for sale online from Amazon, Waterstones, Austin Macauley the publishers and other online bookshops. You can also see the reviews on the above. It is a charming book with beautiful illustrations which will delight any young child. It is a little out of the ordinary as a true story with a light touch of fantasy. With its engaging style and unusual characters it is a pleasure for an adult to read to a child.
