Hi all
my son is in year 2 (just turned 6).
he has to do a project for school where he learns a poem to recite in class and do a bit of research on the author.

does anyone have any suggestions? It needs to be short as his memory isn’t great.

they are learning ‘don’t’ by Michael Rosen as a class so that’s out. I was keen for him to do ‘the end’ by a a Milne but he’s not keen so maybe something funny?

been googling like mad but everything seems quite long.

thanks for any pointers!!

Yes ‘the end’ is the poem that goes when I was one I had just begun etc!

thought he’d love it but he’s not into it 🤷‍♀️

Here are a few ideas....

Happy Thoughts by Robert Louis Stevenson

The Crocodile 🐊 by Lewis Carroll

There once was a man with a beard by Edward Lear

It will be easy to find out some facts about these well known poets, RLS had a very interesting life.

Cats Sleep Anywhere by Eleanor Farjeon, one of my faves

LegoHouse274 · 10/09/2024 19:56

My 6yo has 'The Puffin Book of Utterly Brilliant Poetry' and there's loads in there that she loves. Any chance you could get a copy and have a read through with him to pick one? Lots of them are very short, just a few lines.

The aliens have landed is really fun although maybe a bit long. It's on this site which may have some other shorter suggestions... poetry4kids.com/poems/the-aliens-have-landed/

Here

The last two ones on the page are shorter

https://www.conradburdekin.com/conrads-poems/

But any of Conrad Burdekin's poems are really good primary aged children

How about the Owl and the Pussy Cat?

I would advise getting hold of a poetry book, enjoying sharing them together and then letting him pick one.

My favourite poetry books for this age are:-

The Puffin Book of Fantastic First Poems
The Moon is Gorgonzola by Debra Bertulis
The Shape of Rainbows by Neal Zetter
A Whale of a Time by Lou Peacock

You might be able to borrow a poetry book from the library but a good quality poetry book would be a great investment for his book shelf, to be enjoyed for years to come, should you choose to purchase your own.

Obviously great poems are easily googleable too, if you wanted a quick win, but poetry is so good for young children so I would highly recommend flicking through an actual book if you can as a great poetry book is something he can enjoy coming back to again and again.

Definitely second getting a poetry book to look through together. Take a trip to waterstones or something and choose one? I bought one in a book fayre at school when I was about 7 and still have it. My fave poem was so loved that the page actually fell out of the book and now I have it in a frame on the wall.

Could start something :)

"Spike Milligan's funny verse for kids" or something along those lines

Snowball
By Shel Silverstein

I made myself a snowball
As perfect as could be.
I thought I'd keep it as a pet
And let it sleep with me.
I made it some pajamas
And a pillow for its head.
Then last night it ran away,
But first it wet the bed.

AndyPandyismyhero · 10/09/2024 21:29

I love Spike Milligan's silly verse.

To the library it is! Anyone else hate homework? at 6 they need so much support to complete. It’s a lot of pressure on parents, on top of reading, spelling, maths

Windy Nights
by Robert Louis Stevenson

Whenever the moon and stars are set,

Whenever the wind is high,

All night long in the dark and wet,

A man goes riding by.

Late in the night when the fires are out,
Why does he gallop and gallop about?

Whenever the trees are crying aloud,

And ships are tossed at sea,

By, on the highway, low and loud,

By at the gallop goes he.
By at the gallop he goes, and then

By he comes back at the gallop again.

Ds loved that one at about 6yo. You can say it so it sounds like the rhythm of hooves.

Another one he liked at that age was:
The ABC by (I think Spike Milligan) (there may be more verses between JILL and U, but if there are, I can't remember)

'Twas midnight in the schoolroom
And every desk was shut
When suddenly from the alphabet
Was heard a loud "Tut-Tut!"

Said A to B, "I don't like C;
His manners are a lack.
For all I ever see of C
Is a semi-circular back!"

"I disagree," said D to B,
"I've never found C so.
From where I stand he seems to be
An uncompleted O."

C was vexed, "I'm much perplexed,
You criticise my shape.
I'm made like that, to help spell Cat
And Cow and Cool and Cape."

"He's right" said E; said F, "Whoopee!"
Said G, "'Ip, 'Ip, 'ooray!"
"You're dropping me," roared H to G.
"Don't do it please I pray."

"Out of my way," LL said to K.
"I'll make poor I look ILL."
To stop this stunt J stood in front,
And presto! ILL was JILL.

"U know," said V, "that W
Is twice the age of me.
For as a Roman V is five
I'm half as young as he."

X and Y yawned sleepily,
"Look at the time!" they said.
"Let's all get off to beddy byes."
They did, then "Z-z-z."
