Hi can anyone recommend any short chapter books for my daughter's 7th birthday? She is going into year two in September and is a really proficient reader. She loves independent reading and has asked for some "big girl books" for her birthday in October

Ours got the Enid Blyton Faraway Tree series for their 7th birthdays. They each got a set and enjoyed them. For girls the Beezus and Ramona books by Beverly Clearly are great and some of the other older books like Gobbolino the Witches Cat and Teddy Robinson are wonderful.

The branching out booklists are good for finding books that children are likely to enjoy.

The Princess Rules series by Phillipa Gregory is really
good. Beatrix the Bold series and Hotel Flamingo are all favourites in our house.

My daughter loves the Rainbow Magic books - I think they’re dull but they are popular in her year group so if your daughter likes princesses/fairies they will be a hit.

Amelia Bedelia.

Flat Stanley.

Some of the Ronald Dahls like George’s Marvellous Medicine, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory are hits.

Magic Faraway Tree seems a hit too.

Jess Butterworth adventure club series are good,my dd loved them last year when she was 7, about travelling to different countries helping to save different animals. There are currently 4 in the series.

We are currently reading the toto ninja cat series which I'm quite enjoying.

Enid Blyton has a faraway tree adventures series of short stories. My dd enjoys reading them to herself

Also Anisha the Accidental detective series.

Also my daughter seems to like The Worst Witch and has read Harry Potter. Their reading suddenly comes on well so it’s a nice age for book buying.

Don't forget The Wishing Chair.

Secret Seven if she likes mystery stories.

She's possibly not quite ready to tackle Narnia independently, but it's something to bear in mind for the near future.

Thank you everyone, some really great ideas here. Think I'll have a clear out of her bookcase to make room for all of these

Holly Webb puppy and kitten stories are great for that age if she likes animals.

Helen Peters has a lovely animal series too about a girl called Jasmine who rescues animals. There's Zoe's Rescue Zoo too which is similar.

The Idadora Moon series is another hit with this age group. The same author has written other books based around other characters too: Mirabelle and Emerald.

Paula Harrison's Kitty series is lovely too, about a little girl with cat superpowers.

Series books are great for this age as they tend to be quite simple and very formulaic, which builds confidence.

You need to get Kes Grey's "daisy and the trouble with ..." Series, eg space, school trips, zoos (personal fave). I watched them blow my childs mind... Very funny.

Carbonel by Barbara Sleigh
A Gift from Winklesea by Helen Cresswell
Lizzie Dripping by Helen Cresswell
The Ordinary Princess by M M Kaye
The Dribblesome Teapots by Norman Hunter (and there's another one as well)
A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett (I got that for my 7th birthday)
Little House in the Big Woods by LIW
The Doll's House by Rumer Godden

Can't remember when I first read Narnia, but I was on the Dawn Treader in [Y4] so probably a bit later than this.
Ballet Shoes is generally rated 8+, The Borrowers 9+ but I suspect it depends on how enthusiastic the child is (it seems A Little Princess is also rated 8+, so there you go)

My DD class teacher read Charlie and the chocolate factory, flat Stanley and gangsta granny to them in y2 - she loved them and opted to re read herself

bergamotvetiverthyme · 23/08/2024 11:28

Thank you everyone. I've ordered her The Worst Witch, an Isadora Moon book, the Philippa Gregory books and Matilda. Her teacher read the class a lot of the roald Dahl books last year and she's read a couple from the library. We are going to see Matilda the Musical for her birthday so thought she'd enjoy having her own copy of the book.

There are a lot of great suggestions and I'll be keeping an eye out for them when we visit our favourite second hand bookshop

I've just looked at these and ordered a couple. I think her and her younger brother would enjoy them. My daughter loves reading to her brother at night.
Thank you
