...where do you buy them from?

Lately, I've found that the books I order (mostly from Amazon, but I imagine that it's the same issue even if I were to go to a book shop) seem to fall apart quite quickly. The pages often come away from the spine as I read them - my current one is Jane Eyre, published by Penguin Classics, so I would have expected it to be designed to be kept and re-read, not read once and discarded. The same thing happens with my DC's books - although they may not be particularly gentle with their books.

I would like my books to last longer (as my childhood books did) so please could you recommend a publisher or seller who produces sturdy, well-made books that can be read multiple times without the pages falling out?

Author here and self published through amazon and I have one of my books I’ve had to read zillions (not made up😉, it’s the first of a series and I need to check about different characters/ place names etc!) of times with no issues. I’d say it could be the pillow thing (which I understand and kind of love!!)

No. I will always tell people they have choices when it comes to buying books. I love bookshops. I love libraries.

You said 'don't buy from amazon', not just 'here's an alternative.'.

If you want to buy from Amazon, that's up to you. I'm not sure you need to be quite so defensive about it.

A heads-up though from someone who purchases books for a living. Do check the genuine RRP from the publisher's website before you assume that Amazon are offering you the bargain you think they are. They are shocking at inflating the RRP to make their discount look bigger.

I'm not sure why the other poster has to tell people not to buy from amazon.

Because I'm don't want people to buy books from Amazon. Because I think giving all of our money to one massive corporation is a mistake. Because I can say whatever I like. Giving opinions is kind of a thing on this website.

Thanks for the advice, everybody! I've invested in a bookmark.

Amazon are pretty evil in terms of tax-dodging etc. And what a lot of people don’t realise is that authors/illustrators get lower royalties on heavily discounted sales (eg Amazon) so they might only earn a few pence per book you buy there.
