DD is a huge reader but reaching this in between type stage where she's done with kids books but not at the adult stage. In the not too distant past she's loved Harry Potter, the clockwork sparrow series by Katherine Redfine, Scarlett & Ivy, mysterious benedict series, the murder lost unladylike etc.
more recently she really enjoyed Ruby Redfort and absolutely loved the Hunger Games series - this was a huge hit.
She goes into year 7 next year - desperate for her not to lose her love for reading - any recommendations for her age and stage? Thank you

Mine who has read most of those you've mentioned is liking Alex Rider series at the moment.
She also read Narnia recently

AsparagusGirl · 12/06/2024 20:36

Lottie Brooks
Noughts and Crosses
Some adult books- I think I liked Ruth Rendall around that age, and I read Rebecca in year 6 too and loved it!

CelticPromise · 12/06/2024 20:39

The Ruby in the Smoke and other related ones, I forget the titles.

Greenfloral · 12/06/2024 20:40

Tamora Pierce is a great teen fantasy author - start with Alanna :)

AgathaMystery · 12/06/2024 20:42

Percy Jackson universe - great step up for Harry Potter nerds who also like Hunger Games.

Murder most unladylike series is also a big hit in our house.

Has she read the His Dark Materials series yet? DD (10) is an avid reader and has just finished them, some of the slightly more mature themes went over her head but she loved them. We’re going to sit down and watch the BBC adaptation soon.

We’ve just started Pride & Prejudice, mostly me reading to her, and despite her initial apprehension she’s enjoying it. She likes me explaining the differences in social norms compared to today and me trying to put some of the situations into a more modern setting. I’ve said she can watch the tv adaptation (one of my favourites) when we’ve finished the book.

She’s interested in the Hunger Games series but I think it’s a bit too old for her at the moment, but might be suitable for your DD?

My yr 6 DD just enjoyed Twilight and likes the Geek Girl series.
Northern Lights trilogy?

I was going to recommend these too. Alanna is one of my favourite heroines

My Year 6 DD is enjoying Ali Sparkes Shapeshifter series. Also with a fox by coincidence Lee Newberry The Last Firefox and the two books that follow.

angelopal · 12/06/2024 20:47

Percy Jackson books, Land of Stories series, Poseidon's Academy are books my 10 year likes. She also just got a Skandar book but not read it yet.

Back Home by Michelle Magorian (author of Goodnight Mr Tom) is very good and age-appropriate, as are lots of the other books by the same author.
Floodland by Marcus Sedgwick - read this recently and enjoyed it.
Skylark's War by Hilary MacKay, and its sequel.
Watership Down by Richard Adams.

Some older classics if she hasn't already read them:-
Frances Hodgson Burnett - A Little Princess, The Secret Garden
E Nesbit - The Railway Children, Five Children and It etc.
Louisa May Alcott - LIttle Women and sequels
Tolkien - The Hobbit
LM Montgomery - Anne of Green Gables series
The Diary of Anne Frank

In addition to Jane Austen, I also read Jane Eyre at about her age and loved it.

100% Katherine Rundell. Start with Rooftoppers. She’s incredible.

What brilliant suggestions - I loved all of these! Any recommendations for a 44yr old who loved all those as a child??

@AgathaMystery , if you don't mind slightly more gritty YA books (not ones I'd suggest for the OP's daughter just yet), ones I've enjoyed in recent years have been by authors like Siobhan Dowd (Bog Child, Solace of the Road etc), Geraldine McCaughrean (Where the World Ends), Elizabeth Wein (Code Name Verity), Lauren Wolk (Wolf Hollow), Celia Rees (Witch Child - and I keep meaning to read Pirates! by her which looks very promising), Philip Pullman's Sally Lockhart books (Ruby in the Smoke etc), or are you looking for the comfort and cosiness of more traditional classics?

AgathaMystery · 19/06/2024 14:57

@BookIdeas thank you! I was thinking more adult as I’m not much a fan of YA but TBH I’ve never read any. I love Curtis Sittenfeld, Donna Tartt, Sebastian Junger, David Sedaris etc.

IdgieThreadgoodeIsMyHeroine · 17/07/2024 17:05

A Series of Unfortunate Events and Agatha Christie both spring to mind, especially as she enjoyed the Murder Most Unladylike books.

IdgieThreadgoodeIsMyHeroine · 17/07/2024 17:07

Also the A Good Girl's Guide to Murder Series if she is quite mature for her age- they're great but do contain references to rape and drugs.
