Any good books for 8 year old girls?

Hi All,
My 8 year old daughter loves reading and we are constantly looking for nice books for her. I am trying to select books that have inspiring characters, teach good values, she loves stories about animals.
We try to avoid spooky stories and anything weird/negative.

Recently at school book fair we bought a book called ''Dork Diaries''. For some reason I had a weird feeling that this book is not good. I have googled it and some readers shared their experience saying that the characters are bad role models/materialistic and spoilt teenagers. I have read few pages and I am surprised that school would offer something like this to primary school children.

Unfortunately, from time to time, we fall into traps of inappropriate books.

My daughter reads a lot so any recommendation of good authors and books would be amazing!

my daughter enjoys Harry Potter, isadora moon, Enid byline, Ben miller, David Williams- the usual. She also loved a new series- Skandar unicorn series.

I have found it tricky to keep finding new things but as long as it’s age appropriate (I probably wouldn’t do dork diaries either) then I’m happy for her to read it. I’m an english teacher and we encourage reading of anything as long as they’re engaged- and lots of different characters and narrative styles help develop a rounded sense of empathy.

We also buy non fiction too- listified was v popular recently, books on the universe etc too.

I hope that’s been a bit of help.

The Tom Gates books are great! By Liz Pichon. DS9 (and me) really enjoy them.

the Murder Most Unladylike series is good fun. Not sure if you'd find them negative though, what with them involving murder!

Dork Diaries would be aimed at the year 6s, there's a huge difference between 8 and 11 year olds both still Primary age.

Nancy Springer - Enola Holmes
Trenton Lee Stewart - Mysterious Benedict Society
David Baddiel
Worst Witch
Cressida Cowell Magic and Dragons Series
Or stick to the classics and go for Young Shakespeare books and Dick King Smith.
Stay clear of Jacqueline Wilson or David Walliams as they won't meet your standards.

However, just because a character doesn't meet your expectations doesn't man you can't read it together as a talking point, how could that character have behaved erc

Skandar and the Unicorn Thief (and the sequel) - have bought this for friends kids too who have also loved it
Gladiator - Fight for freedom - great if studying Romans

My DD is 8 and has recently read by herself Impossible Creatures by Katherine Rundell, Wonder by RJ Palacio, some of the Malory Towers books, The Story of Tracy Beaker by Jacqueline Wilson, Adam Breaks the Internet by Adam Beales, and several Horrible Histories books. She also likes graphic novels like Dog Man, Kitty Quest etc. Two lesser known graphic novels she’s enjoyed recently are Super Boba Cafe and Nina Peanut Is Amazing.
