My dyslexic son has really enjoyed comic strip style books, with full colour illustrations e.g. Dog Man, Investigators etc. I've finally managed to get him to read books with bigger chunks of wording, after discovering the full colour editions of Captain Underpants novels and the full colour 13 Storey Treehouse edition (I believe the 26 Storey Treehouse will be released in full colour soon). I really want him to read more of these books with more wording, as he'll be moving up to secondary school soon and I want him to be used to 'proper' reading, as far as possible. Can anyone recommend any other similar books with FULL COLOUR illustrations and some accessible but 'proper' wording I.e. a few paragraphs per page with lots of colour around it (sorry for the capitals, but trying to emphasise that black and white illustrations of the same books just don't appeal to him!).

There are colour versions of The Faraway Tree series www.amazon.co.uk/Faraway-Tree-Adventure-Birthdays-Stories/dp/1444959832/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1TS11OIE4DHX0&keywords=faraway+tree+colour&qid=1707040019&sprefix=faraway+tree+colo%2Caps%2C185&sr=8-1

Agents of S.U.I.T. series is still in comic book format but there’s quite a lot of writing.

Thank you! We have Agents of Suit, but will check out the Far Away tree books.

What about the illustrated harry potters? They haven't got illustrations on every page but when they're there they're beautiful!

Rema chronicles? Just one book at the moment but my 8 year old DS has just finished it and lived it

I think Jamie Smart books would be perfect! Bunny Vs Monkey and Looshkin, both small series. Also have you tried Dav Pilkey's other series Cat Kid Comic Club?

Marblessolveeverything · 04/02/2024 20:31

I would suggest two things, first pop along to a decent book shop and let him browse. I think books are very tactile and sometimes children will surprise you with choices. The illustrated Harry Potter hard back are beautiful.

Also consider Graphic Novels, there is specific versions that are edited to be dyslexia friendly.

I hope they find lots of great books.

TinTin and The Phoenix magazine, £11 a month for weekly subscription magazine, lots of funny/silly comics which are often linked to books (Looskin, Bunny Vs Monkey)

hulahoopqueen · 04/02/2024 23:26

Absolutely Tintin!

Thanks everyone! I am a big Harry Potter fan (and have the illustrated hardbacks too!) and have read some of the books aloud to him, but there are definitely too many words per page for him to want to attempt them on his own. He loves Bunny vs Monkey, Looshkin etc, anything of this colourful comic strip style really. But what I need is something colourfully illustrated that is in-between Harry Potter and the comic strips. The colour Captain Underpants books are a 'proper' book length, have a few paragraphs per page (interspersed with a comic strip here and there) with lots of colour. Perhaps they are one of a kind. I'm which case, well done Dav Pilkey!

Do you know about Barrington Stoke books?

Do you know about Barrington Stoke books?

Yes, and they are fab! Although the only ones I have seen have black and white illustrations and yellow(ish) paper. I haven't seen any in colour.

I remember my son reading Big Nate books, he had loads of these books, some are full colour and some are black and white, they are comic strip type books.

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 05/02/2024 15:39

Graphic novels might be the way to go. There are plenty around, could be worth a Google with a specific genre he tends to enjoy (magic, sci fi, history, action, zombies etc).

BlueChampagne · 06/02/2024 12:28

The Iliad by Gareth Hinds (graphic novel)
Asterix

Mynewnameis · 06/02/2024 12:32

My daughter loves squirell girl. I can photo some pages if you like. I'm sure there are many other marvel characters with books / comics

Robinbuildsbears · 06/02/2024 12:35

Roald Dahl's The Minpins? It's not very long but has big blocks of text

Timeforachocolate · 09/02/2024 10:20

Mine loves the hardback full colour Beano annuals

Geronimo Stilton series
Chinese Born American - age appropriate graphic novel (now a TV series)

When he moves on again and black and white illustrations become acceptable the Treasure Hunter series by James Patterson are good adventures with illustrations on most pages.

Keep reading to him too, that is so important for vocabulary (used to work for a children's literacy charity).
