I have previously bought my niece 'Northern Lights' and 'The Wind Singer' which she loved. She is a voracious reader and well able to cope with fairly challenging reading - I just don't want to get something that isn't age appropriate.

Had a very quick browse on Saturday and the books aimed at ten year olds were a bit easy for her but older ones all seemed to involve boyfriends / general angst!!

how about the artemis fowl books? (eoin colfer) my dc loved them, they are a challenge but really worth it. or the Percy Jackson books, by rick riordan? very funny and easy to wizz through.

ArcticRoll · 17/03/2008 12:09

The Edge Chronicles Paul Stewart
Wolf Brother Michelle Paver

captainmummy · 17/03/2008 12:13

yes wolf brother series is great! I read all my dc's books and it's the mark of a good childrens' author if he/she can hold my attention as well.

Eva Ibbotson: Journey to the River Sea.

Fab, fab, fab.

AbbeyA · 17/03/2008 12:25

My DSs loved Anthony Horowitz.(quite an achievement to get them to read as they were/are not keen readers)

Another vote for Wolf Brother, big hit with ds
Edge Chronicles too
Vintage stuff - has she read Charlotte Sometimes, by Penelope Lively? or A Traveller in Time, by Alison Uttley?

And if she has read and enjoyed Caroline Lawrence she might also like some of Rosemary Sutcliff's books

brimfull · 17/03/2008 12:32

has she read Holes -or is that too easy?

Mallory Blackman trilogy noughts and crosses -may be abit old,but I have forgotten what a 10 yr old looks like

RosaIsRed · 17/03/2008 13:43

Inkheart by Cornelia Funke (and sequel)
Ingo by Helen Dunmore (and sequels)
The Wolves of Willoughby Chase by Joan Aiken (and very many sequels)
Tamburlaine's Elephant's by Geraldine McCaughran
Coraline by Neil Gaiman.

Those are some of my 10-year-old DD's recent favourite books. She also loves the Windsinger and Journey to the River Sea. I also totally second Wolf Brother and Marianne Dreams. And the Lionboy trilogy by Zizou Corder too.

abigaillockhart · 17/03/2008 13:44

Fantastic! We've been out all morning so I've just found your suggestions. I feel an Amazon order coming on....

I'd forgotton about Holes - I loved it. Lots of the others I've never heard of (and I used to teach Year 6) so I might be reading them whilst trying not to break the spines

Thank you all.

ds has loved the Lion boy series by Zizou Corder

SixSpotBurnet · 19/03/2008 22:35

Has she read the "The Dark Is Rising" sequence by Susan Cooper? My DS1 is just finishing it and he has loved it.

Another big favourite with DS1 is the Septimus Heap trilogy by Angie Sage.

elkiedee · 19/03/2008 22:51

Diana Wynne Jones - books for various ages but a lot would be good for a 10 year old. Has she read the other two Dark Materials trilogy books as well as Northern Lights?

floaty · 19/03/2008 23:08

The falcons Malteteaser stoies from Anthonyt Horowitz, sort of next step down from Alex Rider although ds was reading Alex Rider at 10,I wouls also recommend the Percy Jackdon books also the Charlie Bone books and the pure dead magic series. There used to be a website for childrens books called coolreads.com don't kniow if it still exists but ds used to find it good for suggestions

floaty · 19/03/2008 23:11

its www.cool-reads.co.uk
and still exists, has some really useful lists

abigaillockhart · 19/03/2008 23:16

Thanks for the link to cool reads - will check that out. Yes, she has read the Dark Materials Trilogy so I have just ordered some of the suggestions - Wolf Brother, Inkheart, Ingo, Lion Boy, Charlotte Sometimes and A traveller in Time.

Thought it would be nice to start her off on some more series to see if she likes the first instalment.

Combined with an H&M hoodie and a hairband from Accessorize, I'm hoping I'll get the cool Auntie prize!! [Grin]

Thanks

What a fab aunt. I wish I had had an aunt like you.

elkiedee · 19/03/2008 23:28

My aunt was a bookseller and at one point worked in Dillons. She didn't give me presents regularly but she once gave me a selection of books all of which I loved, and I would get to spend birthday/Christmas money using her staff discount, so £7.50 worth of books for £5 (this was late 70s/very early 80s when books still had a cover price of less than £1!)

LuXander · 19/03/2008 23:47

My son is not the world's best reader, but loved the Percy Jackson books. I thought they were pretty good too!
