We've been reading "the owl who was afraid of the dark" series with my 5yo and they've loved them. Any recommendations along a similar line? Short-ish chapters I can read to them. Thanks!

Ah we had those books. Another series which is lovely and similar age is the Sophie set of books:

My 5 year old has enjoyed some of the shorter/younger David Walliams books, The Worst Witch and The Faraway Tree series

There's another by the same author IIRC - Penguin's Progress.

My two loved these stories when they were younger. (Don't be surprised if your 5yo's "Brussels sprouts" tummy place fills up a lot more quickly than his/her "chocolate Santa" place)

Oh - if you would like something different, but fun, try "Little Rabbit Foo-Foo" - very rhythmical and funny story (short though- just one reading session).

Edited to add the "Foo-Foo" bit

Q Pootle 5 books were a favourite in our house

Such a lovely book.

What about Dick King-Smith’s animal books?

Ooh - yes!

King-Smith is brilliant.

Not animals, but nice stories are the "My Naughty Little Sister" ones. Also "Alfie". Old but good.

We love the Rabbit and Bear books. Not chapters but good for that age.

I loved the owl who was afraid of the dark as a child!!

There's another really lovely one I remember from my childhood that is the same sort of reading age called Simon and the Witch by Margaret Stuart-Barry.
