I remember a book from when I was younger late 1990s possibly early 2000s. It was about little elf or fairy type creatures. It was a large hard back book mainly green in colour with lots of little short stories about these creatures in. It quite possibly was a annual but I'm not sure. The illustrations were sort of water colour and basic. I think a lot of the fairy types creatures had w names such as Wanda. It's really bugging me ! Does anyone have any ideas ?

Faeries by Brian Froud???

graveyardsmash · 13/12/2023 22:11

Thank you for the reply but no not that one. They may well have been called elves or something similar not faeries I'm just not sure. It's so frustrating because I can picture them in my head !

Nope not that one either. I do really think it was an annual now. Some of the little stories were only a paragraph long and there were several on each page. The little "creatures" looked human just tiny. They lived in forest/woodland I think.

Lots of the stories were geared towards friendship and the importance of telling the truth and being kind

Not Thumbelina with other stories?

INeedNewShoes · 13/12/2023 22:30

Enid Blyton wrote quite a lot of stories about fairies and the like. Books for younger children with lots of pictures. Things like 'bedtime stories' 'goodnight stories' etc.

graveyardsmash · 13/12/2023 22:32

No, characters were all linked and from the same place and it just had little short stories about them. Sometimes there were several little individual stories on each page with illustrations too. I'm so annoyed that I can't remember it, I loved it as a child !!

Sorry guys I'm not giving you much to go on. I'm not even entirely sure that they were fairy's but I do think some had wings and some didn't. One of the stories the collected needles of a plant of some sort and used them to make ice skates in the winter

There was also an ermine (stoat) that they collected it's winter white coat from when it shed to make something possibly clothes or bedding

Marks and Spencer had an annual like that when I was a child but that's the early/mid 1980s. I think it was under the St Michael brand.

@stargirl1701 I'm off to Google again but that sounds promising !

Looked a bit like this. Same illustrator maybe?

graveyardsmash · 13/12/2023 22:57

@no I don't think the illustrations were int he same style. This one I'm thinking of had very basic drawn outlines thin pencil. then it looked like the water colour to colour them in had bled out of the lines in places or missed bits. Very pale and pastel. Very basic drawings. Close to being childlike but not quite

Found a green one!

@stargirl1701 thank you so much but sadly not I am heading to my childhood home to visit my dad this week. I'm hoping it's still there somewhere and as soon as I find it I will post a picture here. It's probably one of those obscure books that hardly anyone else has read or heard of. It's so frustrating because I can picture the characters so clearly but can't find anything remotely similar !!
