Anyone read this?/their child read this?
I know it's a good book as I remember my mum reading it to me when I was a child.
Obviously that was a long time ago.
Anyone know what age this would be good for?
(For me to read to my child)
My child is 10

I have read it although not for many years. A wonderful book but very sad. As someone with a severely disabled sibling myself I found it really affecting. I’d say 10 was probably ok but do warn her that it’s upsetting.

Yes I remember what happens.
But I know it must be a good book cos I distinctly remember it from when I was young. And my mum read it to me, it certainly bits, so I must have been young enough to have her read to me still.
It must be good to stick out I think.
Am hoping she wants to read to me for quite a while I've been really enjoying the books we've been reading recently!
Thank you for your reply

I hope she enjoys it. I still love reading to my DD (now 8) and hope she will let me carry on!

It’s a great book and ( I believe) is drawn largely from her own experience growing up with a severely disabled sibling. I have read recent criticism that it’s not positive enough about disability. Well it is a fact that having a severely disabled child in the family is not always a bed of roses and I am the parent of one ( happily still with us). The book is very sad in parts but not depressing. Fine for a ten year old but be prepared for tears!

Loves this book as a child. Think I was about 10 when I first read it

My English Teacher read this book in lessons. I was in yr 9 so about 13 or 14 years old. I had a severely disabled little Sister. I remember actually crying and hiding my tears whilst the Teacher was reading a particular chapter. This was in about 1994...a long time ago.
My Sister passed away in 2016 aged 30.

Wow can't help thinking this is a really sad book to read out loud to someone in school.
I'm not surprised you were crying!
I'm sorry about your sister

I remember it too from my childhood.

I think it would be about right for a 10 year old.

Appleblum · 30/11/2023 15:16

I read it when I was around 10 or 11 I think. It was so beautiful but so so sad, make me cry and I felt down for quite awhile after that.

Fourcandleforkhandle · 30/11/2023 20:18

@purpleme12 Thankyou. We miss my Sister and remember her every day.
I think to be fair the Teacher didn't know I had a Sister who was disabled before she read the book. I had a feeling she probably knew after from my Friends but never mentioned anything.
Like others have said be prepared for a bit of sadness.

I read it at about 10, and bought a copy as an adult a few years ago - it holds up well. Definitely weepy though!
