Book recommendations - 5 year old

Looking for book recommendations (to read together rather than him to read himself) for my 5 year old please.

He is autistic and almost certainly has adhd so needs to be engaging. Whilst his own reading ability is good (hyperlexic), his aural language processing is slow, so books that work best for him are ones that are repetitive, or have a good rhythm when read aloud, or have an element of suspense about them. Good pictures help too!

Stuff that has been successful so far includes:

Julia Donaldson - we have all of the big titles but would love recommendations for lesser known titles.

Oi frog series (have all of these)

Acorn wood series (looking for something a little longer in length now)

Some of the classics - Mog, Elmer, V hungry Caterpillar etc.

Any recommendations gratefully received!

Lesser known Donaldson's we love, which are perfect for 5 year olds:-

The Detective Dog
The Hospital Dog
Jack and the FlumFlum Tree
The Giant Jumperee
Night Monkey Day Monkey

I adore Percy the Park Keeper for this age, and there are lots in the series to collect.

Shifty Mcgifty and Slippery Sam is a good suggestion above.

Peter Bently is another great author for this age.

Thank you for the suggestions! I'll head off to youtube and find them being read aloud to see what they're like 🙂

We love 100 Dogs/Cats/Birds here. And the Diggersaurs books by the same author. We also have 101 Bums/Spooky Bums which always goes down well!

Winnie & Wilbur are very loved here, maybe not quite right for your DS to listen to atm but lovely pictures.

What about something like You Choose? There's loads of those. We also like books by Katie Abey (We Ride The Bus is a favourite). They're NOT for bedtime, though, or you'll be there forever while he chooses!

Dr Seuss! Some of the longer ones for somewhat older children, such as The Lorax, Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are?, The Sleep Book and Happy Birthday to You.

Mine liked the Happy Families books by Allan Ahlberg (and various illustrators) at that age. There's also Cops and Robbers by Ahlberg, fits your brief perfectly and very engaging. Good for Christmas too.

Just placed a massive waterstones order with several of the suggestions here - thanks everyone!

I dug out his copy of Hairy Maclairy as a result of the suggestion here, which has been a massive hit so I'll be glad not to have to read this 10 times a day after christmas 😆

Why not go into your local Library and have a chat with staff there? Staff behind the counter know their stock. Joining up and borrowing books is free. Your child can browse and choose their own books. Every county will have it's own specialist Children's Librarian who is there to support youngsters' love of books. Good luck!

My daughter sounds very similar, I don't think I know anyone else who has a hyperlexic child. Mine enjoys the Mr men and little miss stories for me to read.

We have a library membership but our local library is a very small satellite one, with v limited opening hours. We go to the main site when we are over that way (it's about 20 miles away) but now he's at school that's a lot less frequent as its closed on weekends.

How to Count to One ! Great book which my 5yo is over now just due to repetition but my 2yo now loves. I think a 5yo would love it for a first read though, my 5yo got it at 4 and thought it was hilarious.

Angelica Sprocket's Pockets - just got this out of the library and both kids love it.

We are Family by Patricia Hegarty - lovely rhyming book that my eldest has had since a baby and still loves and 2yo now also likes it.

Juniper Jupiter

The spin off Mog stories, we just got Mog and the Vee Ee Tee out the library which my 5yo thought was funny.

Another vote for Dr Seuss. One fish, two fish has a lovely rhythm to it. Green Eggs & Ham was also popular with my Hyperlexic DC too.
