Looking for advice. DS age 13 sadly hasn't read much at home for years since he discovered YouTube & got a phone 🥲. Thankfully he is starting to show a huge interest in history and learning and constantly asking questions about books I'm reading as well which are mostly fiction, I casually suggested to him that he should read at home again (he does read at school obviously) but wanted to help him by finding some good books for him.. any suggestions please?

Is he interested in any particular era of history?

Children are so different it can be difficult to recommend - but there are a number of children's historical novels around - e.g. Rosemary Sutcliffe / Cynthia Harnett through to more modern series such as the horrible histories books etc.

Mine went bananas over Skullduggery Pleasant at that age. Not to my taste, but they are funny...

Yes, I'd definitely ask him that first. No point getting him a book of Wilfred Owen poetry if he's interested in the Roman Empire Wink

My children and I are obssessed with the Skulduggery Pleasant books - 13 is a great age to read them.

Ds likes the Cherub series. They are not in any way high literature but he enjoys them.

Cherub series are good, but if he likes WWII history, then the prequels-the Henderson Boy range are better.
Ds also liked Biggles and loved The Daughter of Time as history ones.

My son likes the Percy Jackson series. Tangentially Greek mythology.

Michael Morungo or Adam Gratz

Yes especially if he likes history this site has many good book recommendations: https://www.searchgoodbooks.com/

it’s for children (up to 20) in general but they have a lot of boyish adventure and historical stuff
