DD has outgrown/bored of her baby books but still hasnt got the concentration to follow a long story - any recommendations? Weve got all the standard hungry caterpillar, peepo, dear zoos and maisy flap books.

Try others of the the Allen Alberg one's - lovely illustrations and easy stories / rhyming, if she likes Peepo she'd like

Each Peach Pear Plum
the Baby catalogue

etc

Have you looked at the lists on Amazon that are age specified - and the "best sellers"? That's sometimes where I get inspiration.

cheeseontoast · 09/03/2008 02:11

My 17mo DD is currently into the following

Muddle Farm - Axel Scheffler (More of a toy really, has magnetic animals)

Hairy Maclary - Lynley Dodd

What Shall We Do With the Boo-Hoo Baby - Cowell/Godon

No Matter What - Debi Gliori

The Tickle Book - Whybrow/Scheffler (Although this one isn't really sturdy enough and requires almost daily repairs!)

One Ted Falls out of Bed - Donaldson/Currey

First Colours - Usbourne Look and Say

Also Each Peach and The Baby Catalogue as already mentioned.

Goodnight Gorrilla.

Was a big hit when dd was about that age.

UnderRated · 09/03/2008 02:24

I Like It When - fab book - they can do the actions and now DS (2.6) 'reads' it to me

Anything by Sandra Boynton, especially Doggies

Goodnight Moon

Goodnight Gorilla

I Love You Mouse (but I think it may be out of print)

Going on a Bear Hunt

Owl Babies

The Very Busy Spider

Dr Seuss - The Cat in the Hat or Green Eggs and Ham

Squirtle · 09/03/2008 07:04

Hairy Maclary books by Lynley Dodd
Don't forget the bacon and Rosie's Walk by Pat Hutchins.
Alienls love underpants by someone.
my cat likes to hide in boxes by someone and L Dodd
Current favourites in our house.

Have you joined a library as this is a good way to try out books? It also makes a nice rainy day trip and many are open on saturdays as well. They are keen to get kids into reading so have boxes of the picture books at the right height for them to go through and choose themselves. This is how we discovered DD's (15 months) 2 favourite bedtime stories which are The Teeny Weeny Tadpole and My G-r-r-r-reat Uncle Tiger. They were such hits that I had to buy copies as we must have one of these each night. We borrowed various books - some she liked, some not quite right and some an instant NO. Since we bought these it has been hard to introduce others as she will shut the book and point severely at the book box for one of these.

Also another fan of Hairy Maclary here and I Like it When... which she also does the actions for - our copy came free in her Bookstart pack. DD loves Kipper's Sandcastle which is from the Little Kipper range. We tried Kipper's Snowy Day not realising different levels and there were far too many words and got bored so never finished after several attempts. We have a time limit before next page turn must happen so limit to words per page but likes there to be a sentence rather tahn just 1 or 2 words. Also likes Miffy at the Gallery which has bold pictures and lovely rhyming couplets so probably any Miffy book would be good.

Definitely definitely these Dr Seuss Miniture Flap Book library.

6 mini books in a box that they can hold in one hand with a flap on every page. Each book is colours / numbers / animals etc.

DD likes to carry them, shuffle them, read them, put them in and out of their box, drop them, talk to them......

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 18/03/2008 08:28

Oh and they're £6 for the box in the shops or £4.50 on Amazon....

posieflump · 18/03/2008 08:30

Have you got the That's not my... books , my 18 month old still loves them

Rosa · 18/03/2008 08:32

agree with what has been said . My dd loved and still does Say hello to the baby animals . Also say hello to the Snowy animals By Ian Whybrow its a touchy feely rhyming book and now she helps to read it and counts animals etc.

HowlingCow · 18/03/2008 20:43

Dinosaur Roar!

Dorling Kindersley Picture books great for interaction/recognition.

peachygirl · 18/03/2008 20:49

More votes for Hairy Mclary here and Slinky Malinky.
DD (13 months) currently loves a book called 'sleepytime kittens' by Joanne Partis.
and 'Hippos go beserk' by Sandra Boynton.
We also have a Kipper collection which is good

Thanks for all your suggestions - Hairy Mclary and Each Peach Pea Plum have been a big hit. Goodnight Gorillas was great for about a month and she has lost interest same with the Tickle book (which I must dig out). I will look out for the others. Thanks for your suggestions been so helpful.
