Horse books for young teens?

Longwhiskers · 19/10/2023 21:49

Looking to buy some horsey books for a relative. When I was her age I loved saddle club, stuff by the pullein-thompson sisters, Shantih the Arab horse etc. I expect they’ll all now seem really dated and I wondered if there is any newer series popular with horse mad kids? Thanks

The one dollar horse series by Lauren St John - it's a trilogy, this is the first. They're in the teen/young adult section in my local library but I really enjoyed them too!

The my friend flicka books. Think there’s 3 of them. I was obsessed with them when I was a teenager

The girl who rode the wind, free rein and any Esme Higgs books seem to be a hit with my horsey daughter

For age 12-ish Riverdale series by Amanda Wills

Oh to be young again.

Longwhiskers · 19/10/2023 22:21

Gosh it’s so tempting to order all of these for myself :) I’ve got the first of each series by Kate Lattey and Lauren St John in a basket waiting to decide!

The Stacy Gregg Pony Club ones are good, they are from about 2012 so not the newest but they don't read as dated, as far as I remember the characters had phones but not social media.

Heartland (there is a TV series on Netflix too) or Chestnut Hill. Both are by Lauren Brooks. Chestnut Hill is aimed at a slightly younger audience. It's a school story series with horses.
Fidra books reprinted some of the Jill books so you might find them.

Go for the classic My Frienda Flicka, Thunderhead and Green Grass of Wyoming. They cover all human emotion and struggle, a young boy growing up with his horse.

Nobody's Horse by Jane Smiley

Take away her mobile phone and get her into Jill? They are quite possibly the best books ever written and I’ll send April, May and June Cholly-Sawcutt over to fight anyone who says otherwise!

Definitely the Jill pony books by Ruby Ferguson! Even in this day and age, which pony-mad girl wouldn't love A Pony for Jill, Jill and the Perfect Pony, etc. Great memories.

If she likes ponies, I'd recommed the Galway Connemara which was published this year (a modern day version of Black Beauty, about an Irish Connemara pony) or the Forgotten Horse.

The war that saved my life - is not totally horse centric but definitely big horsey component!

stayathomer · 18/04/2024 14:17

Have been re buying the Jill books for myself but for any fans there’s an author that continued them - Jemma spark. Have only just opened them and saw her mention black boy and rapids and I was brought back to my childhood!!!
