What age is Dick King-Smith aimed at? DS is 5 and I'm not sure if this is over his head a bit...

That's it really - just got The Hodgeheg from the library and DS seems to be following but I have to keep stopping every so often to explain things... is that normal?

DS is 5 and a half by the way.

There are two versions of this book. If it has a green cover then it the publishers say it is aimed at 5-8 years. If it has a yellowish cover then it is aimed at 8-12 years. Hope that helps.

oh I got the yellow one - it was in the "young reader" bit of the library (as opposed to "older reader")!

Oh well, he seems to be enjoying it - I will persevere! We have "Clever Duck" and "A Mouse Called Wolf" to get through next.

We're reading The Water Horse at the moment ie I'm reading it at bedtime, and DD 4, and DS 6, love it. I have to explain lots of different things, but they seem to be really enjoying it.

It is imposssible to say exactly what age a book will be right for as children develop at such different rates. I find I have to explain a lot more to ds than I did to dd, but I don't mind that, I enjoy the talks around books.

Try Who Next (here), probably at your local library. It catalogs authors by genre and target reading level. It sounds to me like OP's nephew would like fantasy stuff, the Who Next book would help pinpoint which authors.

We've never been big fans of Dick King-Smith. He writes a lot of complex sentences and we lose our way before we get to the end of them. Don't like his style much at all. Did not find Hodgeheg an easy or enjoyable read.

Apart from the story about the great dane. That was enjoyable.

Ds is 6 and really enjoyed Mouse family Robinson
