We really struggled to get him to read anything other than David Walliams until we found these but sadly he's nearly finished the last one and we're looking for something else. He's got some SEN so has struggled a bit with reading over time though he's picking up now.

We tried the How to Train your Dragon books but he's not interested.

He says he likes things to have a strong central character with some comedy and mystery elements thrown in

Thank you

Terry Pratchett's Tiffany Aching books?

cottonwoolbrain · 03/10/2023 12:55

I don't know those ones, off to look them up thank you

Percy Jackson maybe?

longestlurkerever · 03/10/2023 12:57

Percy Jackson?

user1471474138 · 03/10/2023 12:59

The Loki books by Louie Stowell

cottonwoolbrain · 03/10/2023 13:19

Oh Percy Jackson may be a good idea DD loved those books at that age and I'm sure we've still got the whole set somewhere - though whether she'll part with them for him to read or whether I'm going to have to buy another set remains to be seen. we have 2 sets of Tom Gates!!

@BlueChampagne I've just ordered Wee Free Men so will see how he gets on. I did know them but I'd forgotten about them

@user1471474138 Yes the Loki books are good but I think he rejected them last summer so I might bring them out again

Land of stories series?

FallingAutumnLeaf · 03/10/2023 13:42

Wings of Fire might meet your requirements, tho less humor than Wizard of Once.

LovelyBoy2023 · 03/10/2023 14:46

Skullduggery Pleasance?

user1471474138 · 03/10/2023 18:51

Skandar and the unicorn thief?

user1471474138 · 03/10/2023 18:54

Also maybe the Morrigan Crow books, definitely a strong central character with mystery and magic thrown in

Watchinghockey · 03/10/2023 19:01

Jessica Townsend's Nevermoor series

cottonwoolbrain · 03/10/2023 19:33

Thanks everyone. I've book marked this post and ordered one of the Terry Pratchett's and the first of the Skulduggery Pleasant books. If he shows no interest then I'll try something else so happy to keep the ideas coming. He's supposed to do 20 minutes reading a day as part of his English homework but I want him to enjoy it - and preferably carry on reading.

DD is 17 and was a voracious reader from about the age of 6 but he's sadly not followed in her footsteps

My DD loved the Wizards of Once.

Abi Elphinstone is a favourite too. The Everdark/Rumblestar
collection is well worth a try.

IncomingTraffic · 03/10/2023 19:42

I as going to suggest nevermoor and abi elphinstone’s work too.

Dianna Wynne Jones might be a good bet too.

Peacendkindness · 03/10/2023 19:44

Wings of fire I think - lovely books

Tiredbadger · 03/10/2023 19:52

Amari and the night brothers by BB Alston is amazing, my 10yr old loves them and also loves Wizards of Once.

12roundsofwhitelowfatspread · 03/10/2023 19:53

Septimus Heap series by Angie Sage - huge hit here after Wizards of Once.

IncomingTraffic · 03/10/2023 21:04

Garth Nix’s keys to the kingdom series is also good.

cottonwoolbrain · 06/10/2023 08:47

@12roundsofwhitelowfatspread The first Septimus Heap turned up in the post last night and I read the first chapter earlier this morning.. > can see that even if DS does not read it, I will
