He's a very good reader, but not that keen. He gets put off by really small type.
Thought we'd cracked it recently as he read the Beast Quest series and couldn't put them down.
He's read all the usual suspects, Horrid Henry, Roald Dahl, etc etc.
He likes fantasy with a historical flavour, you know knights, romans, warriors of any sort really.
Any Suggestions? Ta x

Cornelia Funke's Ghosthunters series is good at this level. (I think the BookPeople - online - had a set of 4 very cheaply recently - might be worth a look.)

To tiptoe onto longer books Cressida Cowell's How to train your dragon and sequels are great. They look like Horrid Henry - line illustrations, very funny, large spaced type etc. But they are actually longer and more demanding language. My boys loved them.

Ghosthunters - here you go

4 for £7, RRP £20!

Thanks Roisin, they look good... and what a bargain!
He loved the horrendous hiccup books, we've even got them on cd (read by the gorgeous david tennant which makes them even better in my eyes )
Any others anyone?

What about Grk - A Dog called Grk by Joshua Doder. If he enjoyed the Hiccup books, he should be fine with Grk. (There are 3 or 4 in the series.)

A dog called Grk £3.99 for the first 3 books! (RRP £15)

They are a lot longer the Ghosthunters or Horrid Henry, but certainly comparable to Ghosthunters. If you do get them, read the first couple of chapters yourself. There's a scene about a pork chop or a very very funny! Enjoy.

What about the Jack Stalwart books or Oliver Moon or the Books for Boys series.

ingles2 · 05/03/2008 21:08

He plodded through the Jack Stalwart book I got, ...reading perfectly but p.l.o.d.d.i.n.g, just not very interested. I think the futuristic element doesn't do it for him, but give him a gladiator with a sword and shield and he's off...
He read Ancient Greeks to me from a kids encyc. tonight. That was great. Maybe he's not going to be a fiction reader just facts! Well. I'll keep trying..
Thanks again for your suggestions
