My 14 yo DS is after some recommendations of books to read please. He'd quite like a series to get his teeth into though is not a fan of very long of heavy books (or carrying them around). He's a very capable reader but not always a fan of very deep or heavy subjects.

Many thanks in advance.

I take it he’s done Alex Rider, pittacus lore, John green, etc?

Lovelydovey · 02/09/2023 20:36

Yes, afraid so! He enjoyed most of them.

Michelle Pavers Soul Eater series. Best thing ever.

Then he may be a bit young yet but the Kaos Walking series, Patrick Ness? Bit gorey/not for the faint hearted, but very gripping and thought provoking. Tell him to keep going through the first chapter which is quite hard to work out what's going on. After that they are pretty unputdownable . . .

Misslizzie96 · 02/09/2023 21:22

My son enjoyed the Rick Riordan books.

Notquitegrownup2 · 02/09/2023 21:22

I think the Michelle Pavers books are the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness . . .

Why did they stop making the point horror books? They were brilliant for this age and am in the same boat of looking for suitable books for my ds13.
Wish I'd kept all my books for him.

heymammy · 13/09/2023 20:47

There are plenty of Stephen King books he might like op, don't be put off by the 'horror' tag sk has.

JustLookingThanks · 13/09/2023 20:52

I second the Cherub series and Z for Zacharia, both excellent.

My sons enjoyed -
Orange Boy by Patrick Lawrence

Dystopian Hunger games style stories - The Giver by Lois Lowry ( a great writer)
Gone Series by Michael Grant

Science fiction - how about Ready Player one by Ernest Cline
Or The Martian by Andy Weir both based on films and good reads.

Zombies - The Enemy by Charlie Higson ( by 14 year old didn't like this but his friends did)

One of us is Lying by Karen McManus was really popular in their school

Thirteen by Tom Hoyle one of my boys really enjoyed this series, said it was really exciting. He's dyslexic so if he romps through a book it's really good!

Go to your local library and drop him off in the teenage section to browse. And check if they have E books lots of libraries do and the kids love it.

The Terry Pratchett books are really fun and start from younger readers right up to adults, but teenagers will love them as well. Start him on 'Guards Guards', they are not thick, heavy books and entertaining on many different levels.

BlueChampagne · 21/09/2023 16:41

CorporalAngua methinks you are biased 😆But absolutely right.

CurlewKate · 21/09/2023 16:43

He's old enough for Philip Pullman. My ds loved Patrick Ness at this age. He also liked PG Wodehouse and Agatha Christie.
