Sci fi books for kids

Does anyone know of any good sci fi kids to read to DC (6 years old but will be ok for books for 8-10 year olds if I read them) that are heavy on the science?

If they were older they would be reading The Martian and watching films like Apollo 13 and Hidden Figures. They will happily read non fiction science books all day long but I like to mix in some fiction now and again!

Six is a bit young for these, but I loved these in my early teens.

Trillions (and other books by Nicholas Fisk)
If he likes Dr Who there are dozens of novels but I'm not sure what age group they are pitched at.

Thank you both for the suggestions! Not authors I know but both look promising - I can always do an abridged version at the moment!

Orion Lost is a really good read.
Maybe also Only You Can Save Mankind.
Oh and Cakes in Space is fun.

The Warhammer books written for children are great, bonus if you enjoy audio books as they are narrated by David Tennant. There is also a more fantasy series well. My daughter enjoyed both.

The sci-fi series starts with Attack of The Necron by Cavan Scott.

Thanks for the additional recommendations! I actually own Only You Can Save Mankind but had forgotten about it...

I picked up a copy of Neil Gaiman's Fortunately, the Milk in a charity shop the other day so we are trying that out. More on the fantasy/surreal side of sci fi but it has a time machine and is going down well so far.
