Graphic novels/ comics for 9 yr old (SEN)

qazxc · 23/06/2023 13:14

DD has just turned 9, she has additional needs (probably developmentally a couple of years behind) and is only at a quite basic reading level. I want to encourage her to read. She loves art, she creates her own anime or gacha stories, watches a lot of videos on the subject. So I thought comics or graphic novels would be a good introduction into reading.
Any recommendations? not too fussed about subject matter (although something with animals and/or main girl protagonist would be good), sometimes it's rather hard to judge online what books are age appropriate (not too violent, or sexy, or scary).
Thanks in advance.

My children liked the Amulet series www.commonsensemedia.org/book-reviews/the-stonekeeper-amulet-book-1

TripleDaisySummer · 23/06/2023 13:38

My children also like the Amulet series

Also the Olympians

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00NKBKACO?ref_=dbs_m_mng_rwt_calw_tkin_3&storeType=ebooks - an example from series.

Though I did not pay the price boxsets are coming up as at the moment on Amazon.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will look into them.

mine love Olympians but it's too old for my bookworm 8 yr old. Amulet is great.

Rabbit & Fox is incredibly sweet (& funny) & very little text https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B087CP8FQX?binding=hardcover&qid=1687615949&sr=8-2&ref=dbs_dp_awt_sb_pc_thcv

Zita the space girl is a fantastic adventure & female protagonist https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B074CB1LW9?binding=paperback&qid=1687616128&sr=8-1&ref=dbs_dp_awt_sb_pc_tpbk

Hilo is very very funny & silly & not much text https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hilo-Boy-Crashed-Earth-Book/dp/0141376929/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?crid=2S50KLF9M8UP6&keywords=hilo&qid=1687616230&sprefix=hilo%2Caps%2C159&sr=8-2

Not a comic book but fantastic illustrations, nicely spaced text, female protagonist, animals (she's a hamster 🤣)& adventure- Harriet the Hamster Princess . They're all fairy tale reworkings. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08L3HB2LW?binding=paperback&qid=1687616381&sr=8-1&ref=dbs_dp_awt_sb_pc_tpbk

Jamie smart - either his books or the weekly phoenix kids comic. They are cartoons rather than a graphic novel, but some characters cross across books. Both of my DC loved fish head Steve as a starter and my dd was a fan of his Looshkin character/books

Needmorelego · 24/06/2023 15:43

Graphic novels by Raina Telgemeier are brillant.
She has done a trilogy (Smile, Sisters and Guts) plus a couple of stand alone books.
There are also graphic novel adaptions of The Babysitters Club - the first few are by Raina Telgemeier and then others by different writers. Really nice style.

Bumble and snug
Phoenix comic is also very good

AcidTest · 24/06/2023 16:27

At this age my DD loved the Reiga Telgemeier books and the Phoenix comic.

My DS is 9 and likes Dog Man, Captain Underpants and the Beano.

My child reads the Phoenix weekly comic and likes Bunny v Monkey (Jamie Smart). It’s very exciting getting it through the letterbox each month.

It’s a bit younger, but if your child has additional needs and needs support understanding emotions, the Bumble and Snug series is great as it’s fun and subtle. The new one came out last week and I saw it in Sainsburys this morning.

There’s also this emotional literacy based graphic novel set in space which is due out next year, which looks promising . Written by psychologist and children’s comic artist. I’ve signed up to mailing list:

www.emotosphere.com

If anyone knows of any other emotion focused graphic novels that look fun, please share. I’ve bought so many books to support my child but if they’re too serious or picture book looking, they don’t get read!

HeyAliceYoucool · 24/06/2023 17:14

^ sorry Phoenix is weekly, not monthly!

HeyAliceYoucool · 24/06/2023 17:16

@lovelylivia ah good to see someone else recommend Bumble and Snug! New one out looks good.

There's also a Little Sisters Babysitter Club graphic novels. DD loves all of these and the amulet series. She's impatiently awaiting book 9. She also loves Terri Libenson.

Seconded. DS who also has some SEN was a very very reluctant reader and and it was only when my friend who is a children's librarian we started on the Phoenix magazines that he showed any interest at all. It felt like a miracle after he'd rejected almost everything else.

A few years down the line and we have an absolutely massive pile of the things and he still waits for it every week.

You can get it on subscription here

Tom Gates is also worth a look and the Thirteen Storey Tree House books. Once we finally got DS reading he sped through them then read them again and again

HeyAliceYoucool · 01/07/2023 13:44

Loving the love for the Phoenix comic - i stumbled across it by accident and it’s got my child into the habit of reading and she’s now reading Harry Potter and all sorts. Hopefully by posting about it here, more reluctant readers will benefit from it!

HeyAliceYoucool · 29/09/2023 22:01

I bought my child the Hilda book as recommended here but she wasn’t digging it. I thought it looked cool. So difficult to judge what graphic novels they’ll like. It’s just such a shame the book shops have a limited selection- she prefers to look at print books , not online.

Icedlatteplease · 29/09/2023 22:09

Not a girl protagonist but Calvin and hobbs

Tbh you can't beat peanuts

PettyMare · 08/10/2023 02:18

Thirteen storey treehouse series. It's what got my son finally reading.

michaelcolombo · 16/12/2023 06:05

the bone comics by jeff smith are great

TheIsleOfTheLost · 16/12/2023 10:36

I second HiLo by Judd Winick. The main character is a male robot, but there are good female characters too. I love reading them with the kids. Definitely didn't pick the last one up to read on after they went to sleep as I couldn't wait to find out what happened.

Aashritha · 17/12/2023 22:40

I found this book interesting - How Dad made me a superhero. My 7 year old read this quite a few time on just 2 days .. He's actually overcoming his little fears and open to explore the scary situations. I happy with this book.
