Funny books or audiobook recommendations for reluctant reader teen boy

Looking for recommendations for funny books or audiobooks for my DS who is nearly 13 and a reluctant reader. He used to love reading and has read all the HP books, Percy Jackson books and others. However over the last few years he would rather watch Netflix series than read so I'm hoping to try and get him reading just a bit more. I'm thinking a funny book might spark his interest. Would Bill Bryson books be suitable for teens? Any other recommendations? Thanks

Thanks @Riverlee. Hadn't thought of that one.

Has he come across Skulduggery Pleasant? My DS14 absolutely loves these, and there's plenty of them! Main character is a skeleton detective, plenty of wit, magic & quite a lot of violence, with great characters & exciting plots.

Hitchhikers Guide & Discworld could also be good, especially as audiobooks. Also Good Omens.

I was also going to suggest Skullduggery Pleasant. They’re brilliant and the audiobooks narrator is amazing.

Fantastic. These are great thanks

Any other suggestions for funny books? I'm gutted he rarely reads now. When he was younger he read loads. Would be great to find a book he really enjoyed.

Holes by Louis Sacher (and his other books)
Comic books? tintin, etc? Still reading.

The william books

pharmachameleon · 20/06/2023 20:31

Thanks @ticketstickets I'll check out Holes. I don't think he'd like Tin Tin but I could try-he's quite grown up for his age so would be more interested in adult type books and audiobooks I think.

Guards Guards - Terry Pratchett

Just realised he read Holes at school last year! Thought I recognised the name.

PG Wodehouse?

pharmachameleon · 21/06/2023 08:08

Thanks @SnuggleBuggleBoo I'll have a look.
He started the first Skulduggery audiobook last night and loved it. He didn't want to turn it off at bedtime.

Following! I have an 11yr old with the same issue OP. He's trying Artemis Fowl books now on a recommendation from his mate.

Have you tried non fiction? My ds was really into Jon Ronson at this age.
For fiction, what about Patrick Ness? They are quite challenging- you might want to read them first to see if you think they're suitable, but I think they're brilliant.
The Philip Pullman audio books are brilliant- he might find the actual books a bit difficult just yet but they make a great listen!

CurlewKate · 25/07/2023 06:19

Sorry-just saw you mention Bill Bryson. His audio books are great too.

pharmachameleon · 25/07/2023 08:24

Thanks all. He's loving the Skulduggery audiobooks. I'll try a few of the other suggestions once he fancies a change.

My 10 and 12 are enjoying The School of Good and Evil on audible. I wouldn’t say it’s funny but they’re glued!
