We're in that stage where books are feeling quite babyish (we still have some favourites- the crayons books, once upon a fairytale, poo in the zoo etc. But looking for new books is tricky as they either seem too young or too old.

She's currently learning to read and doing really well, she's on stage 2 Biff and Chip books, but still enjoys being read to - any suggestions of a good in-between book?

I've bought Mummy Fairy and Me as that seems to be well rated for 5-8, any other suggestions?

We’ve been reading the Faraway Tree at bedtime and my 5 year old loves it! She is in reception on Yellow books with the RWI reading program, loving reading everything in sight! She likes reading the Mog books. She usually reads a couple of picture books to us, then I read a couple of chapters of a longer book like Enid Blyton or currently we are reading The Owl Who Was Afraid Of The Dark. She also enjoys being read Roald Dahl and Brambly Hedge by Jill Barklem. The Brambly Hedge books have the most beautiful illustrations! I adored them as a child too.

I got the osbourne set from Amazon there's 50 books at different levels. Me and my son have really enjoyed them, they usually have a good message at the end. There's also a few pages of word games at the end of each book that has helped get my son interested in reading them all the way through.

The Large family books are manageable for little readers too. And Hairy Maclary! I wouldn’t say they are babyish but I know different kids have different tastes. And agree with above, the Osborne books are good. I was given them but think you can find them second hand fairly cheaply.

Mr Majeika went down well with mine, and the Harriet Muncaster books (Isadora Moon, and the Kitty / Mirabelle series) too. The Claude books are lovely, and Billy and the Mini Monsters. DD is currently very keen on Helen Peters’ animal books.

We’d also love any other suggestions.

We're reading the roald dahl ones to our 5 year old. She's in reception and halfway through the phonics scheme so can read all her toddler books (hide and seek pig etc) by herself

Katie-Morag
Winnie the Witch (there are some aimed at age 5-8)
Dick King-Smith's Sophie books

ReallyShouldBeDoingSomethingElse · 07/06/2023 13:54

There are picture books with a more text on a page, like Katie Morag and the Library Lion (both of which are wonderful series/books). Percy the Park Keeper fits this as well I think.

First chapter books like The Owl who was afraid of the dark are great too and are the kind of book you can read to her now and in a few months' time she'll enjoy reading it to herself.

Billy and the mini monsters, Oliver moon, famous five/wishing chair/faraway tree colour short stories.

We've just bought 'Rosie Revere the engineer' which is great for reading to young girls.

FindingTheFox · 08/06/2023 22:51

We also found that age tricky for books. Some of the first chapter books my DC enjoyed were:
The Worst Witch
Isadora Moon
Beast Quest
Roald Dahl
The Christmasaurus

Worriedmum40284 · 08/06/2023 22:54

The Hotel Flamingo series is a good intro to chapter books, we really enjoyed those.

MonkeyHanger1 · 08/06/2023 23:27

Oi Frog range - we've got them all! My DD5 loves them.

mumarooni · 08/06/2023 23:44

Enid blytons faraway tree series, my 5 year old loved. Really imaginative.

whathappenedtome12 · 11/06/2023 07:09

We have been loving The Incredible Thread - it's a personalised picture book for older kids that let's them discover their ancestral heritage. Really unique and our 6-year-old loves it!

babysoupdragon2 · 11/06/2023 12:48

I'm currently reading the colour versions of the Roald Dahl books to my 5 year old, she loves them, and the pictures really help her.

Others I'd suggest - Mrs Pepper pot series, the Faraway tree, Horrid Henry, and Milly Molly Mandy.
