What are your 3.5yo reading?!

As per the title, I feel it's time to get DD (3.5) some new books, and donate some of the books more suited to babies. So what do your 3/4 year olds like? She loves an interactive book but will also sit and listen to me read a storybook.

Well he's not reading anything because he's only 3.5... but he enjoys listening to all types of stories and happily chooses any and all books from his bookshelf to look at independently. I'm not really sure there would be much I'd consider getting rid of because it's more suited to babies he loves looking at familiar stories that he can 'read' independently.

What kind of books do you think she's out grown and why not take her shopping or to the library to choose something new, she's the best person to ask if you're looking for new ideas.

Pumpkinbumkin200 · 21/05/2023 19:47

Mainly still loving all the Julia Donaldson books. Also Shirley Hughes books which are lovely.

imapterodactyl · 21/05/2023 19:48

He loves the Julia Donaldson books in general. Also space, dinosaurs, aaaaalll the Meg and Mog which drive me mad. He also loves his old baby books sometimes. I'd let your DC choose

Tinyant · 21/05/2023 19:49

Julia donaldson
kes gray Oi books
the runaway pea books
the dinosaur who pooped

MouseTheDog · 21/05/2023 19:52

Mine is 5 now but we’ve been reading The book with no pictures for at least 2 years 😂 also Oi Cat etc

FuckParkdean · 21/05/2023 19:53

I work full time, however she regularly goes to the library with her childminder so I'll ask her what she tends to go for too, hadn't thought of that! Will also take her into charity shops/book shops too, but we were picking books for bedtime tonight and it just made me wonder if there were particular hits for children her age. She's not that into the That's Not My books so much now, so I'll probably gift them on to someone, Julia Donaldson are a huge hit here too so anything along those lines I think she would really enjoy.

Keep the baby books for a while yet.
You're getting into Gruffalo and Hungry Caterpillar territory now.
The Works have some great offers on good quality children's paperbacks.

I'd look out for:

Julia Donaldson
Michael Rosen
Nick Sharratt

Barleysugar86 · 21/05/2023 19:55

You have to get the 'theres a monster/ alien/ witch' etc in my book books.

Mine went mad for them, its full of interactive instructions to shake, blow, sing, stroke, wave etc.

Redebs · 21/05/2023 19:56

Don't forget non-fiction too. Lots of photos and illustrations of machines, space, dinosaurs and buildings go down well.

MuffinToSeeHere · 21/05/2023 19:57

Definitely let her choose some but if you want to buy some new ones to try and need ideas this is a good place to start.

Some really great ideas here, thank you. The There's a X In My Book books look really good fun, she'd love those!

Already have a huge gruffalo fan on our hands, no complaints here though as I love it too.

That's a good age for the Mr Men books. My ds still loves them at 5.

CooCooCaChu · 21/05/2023 20:00

Mine are very into Mr Men at the moment
Hairy McClary
Mog
Meg and Mog
Little Princess
Large Family

SBAM · 21/05/2023 20:02

My 3.5 year old loves Julia Donaldson, the book with no pictures, nick sharatt books like shark in the park, the giant jam sandwich, the ten little .. series.

We also recently picked up a book called Superpoop about a poo superhero which he loves 💩

CooCooCaChu · 21/05/2023 20:03

Ladybird fairy tales
There's a bear on my chair
Maisy books
Topsy and Tim

Mutabiliss · 21/05/2023 20:05

Don't get rid of the baby books, they're great for when they're starting to read. Mine is 4.5 and likes reading/guessing the words in the little Mog books.

Someone gave us a set of Usbourne non-fiction lift the flap books recently, and they've gone down very well. Lots of words so needs an adult to read them, but very engaging.

FuckParkdean · 21/05/2023 20:10

Greta point about keeping for learning to read, I think I'll do just that, thanks!

I've managed to order 2 for £7 on Amazon - we've gone with Superworm and There's a Dragon in My Book. Can't wait to read them tomorrow with her!

OP posts:
RightWhereYouLeftMe · 21/05/2023 20:19

The koala who could/the lion inside/the squirrels who squabbled.

Winnie the witch

We have all the "10 little.." books.

Barbara Throws A Wobbler is good.

RightWhereYouLeftMe · 21/05/2023 20:19

Oh and definitely the "there's a witch/monster/dragon/alien in my book" ones.

There is an Usbourne lift the flap about poo which is well loved here!

Doveyouknow · 21/05/2023 20:41

The Alfie stories by Shirley Hughes are loved here, some of the Allen allberg ones, oh no George makes everyone smile and the usborne flap ones are big hits.

Aww, what's wrong with Meg & Mog? Those were some of my favourite books when I was this age. The TV series was brilliant too.

Outnumbered4321 · 08/06/2023 16:56

The book with no pictures and as other have said There's a Monster in your book - both of these have my pre-schooler howling with laughter.

SparkyBlue · 08/06/2023 16:59

My four year old DD has been big into the Fairytale Hairdresser books now for a while. She also loves the Lulu series of books.
