Books about starting school

My 4yo is v sensitive and has always said she doesn't want to go to school. She has been saying this whenever the topic of school has been raised by anyone, and over the past however many months she has started to worry and get upset, saying she's scared to go to school. Due to this DH and I never mention school and I try to warn other people around us not to either.

The past few weeks she now brings it up herself multiple times of day. I have tried reassuring her, changing the subject, exploring her worries, emphasising that school is a long time away and so on but none of it is helping. She loves books so any recommendations that might help her?

Janet and Allan Ahlberg's 'Starting School'.
One of the best children's books ever published.

I notice that the term Big School is used quite a lot by people, books and media. This gives the impression of something really scary.
Do you know anyone with kids at school? If I knew you then I'd send my kids round to tell your child about how great Reception is 😁

I also recommend 'Starting School'.

A very sweet story is Alison Uttley's 'Fuzzypeg goes to school'. It's one of her Little Grey Rabbit books.

We had a book called Small by Clara Vuillamy (not sure about spelling).
Small is a toy mouse who goes missing on a trip to granny's and turns up safe and well after a big adventure.
Then there's a follow up book when Small's owner Tom starts school. They're really sweet books.

A warning though, one of my kids found some starting school type books a bit worrying. We had one where the kid worries about not being able to find his peg on the first day for example. He obviously does find his peg and all is well but the story planted a worry in ds's head that maybe he wouldn't be able to find his peg. That hadn't even occurred to him before. So if your dd is particularly susceptible you should read them first just in case.

Not a book recommendation, but a TV program. CBeebies show ‘time for school’ in the summer usually, and there’s currently a couple of mini song episodes on iPlayer. The main episodes are great for showing what reception is really like, and you can probably find some on YouTube.

It is lovely isn't it.

We read this one, the Topsy & Tim book and Harry & His Dinosaurs Go To School.

If you take her to the library you might be able to find some others too Wink

I was going to suggest this, it’s a fabulous series.

Also, our school does loads of settling in sessions both with and without parents - pretty much every Friday after summer half term there is something running for the September reception cohort.

Usually the nursery does preparation for starting school. Are any of her nursery friends going to the same school? Perhaps meet up with them for breakfast and go in together?
