Books to read at bedtime to 9 and 8 year olds

9 year old has moderate learning difficulties and 8 year old has autism. They have got into chapter books recently if I read to them and I have to admit it's great being able to use the promise of an extra chapter as an incentive to get ready for bed quickly.

So far we've read all the "daisy and the trouble with" books by kes gray, the christmasauras by Tom Fletcher,
The bed and breakfast star, sleepovers, the suitcase kid by Jacqueline Wilson.

I've got the mum minder, double act and best friends by Jacqueline Wilson to read next.

I'm not sure which other Jacqueline Wilson books are ok for this age as I know some are quite grown up and I don't want to sound like a snob but there are some issues in them that I'm not sure I want my dc exposed to like the domestic violence in cookie and the mum who leaves her children on their own.

They seem to like the ones about kids with issues though.

We've tried some of the roald Dahl books but they were too grown up for them I think, maybe in a year or 2. Any ideas of what to read to them next?

Try the first Mr Gum book. They do get a bit darker but the first one is hilarious.

You could try the Faraway Tree books (maybe skip over the bits where the dear girls are always helping with the housework while the boys do something less feminine).

I’ve recently read The Christmas Pig and the Weirdstone of Brisinghamen to my DC (similar ages) and both went down really well.

The lion the witch and the wardrobe is a good one

Narnia.

We are reading The Ickabog by JK Rowling. It has some very grown up themes but my autistic 9 year old has enjoyed it very much

clever polly and the stupid wolf and
Mrs pepper pot? Both books are similar in that each chapter is its own short story. Very loved by both my DC at similar ages

Try reading a collection of fairy tales - 25 stories for young children and 20 Stories for Bedtime Reading to Children. Books about friendship and self-confidence. About princes, princesses, different animals
