Kids books on Greek mythology?

So I've been reading quite a few books recently based on Greek mythology (mostly Natalie Haynes). My DS 7 is really interested in some of the stories, I was wondering if anyone could recommend any child appropriate books on Greek mythology? It'll probably be a combination of me reading to him and him reading on his own.

When my son was that age he loved 'Atticus the Storyteller's 100 Greek Myths' by Lucy Coats and Anthony Lewis'

Atticus the Storyteller’s 100 Greek Myths by Lucy Coats and Anthony Lewis was loved by both of mine at similar ages to your DS.

The Percy Jackson Heroes of Olympus series. I'm looking forward to reading these again with DS once he's a bit older.

For my money this is the best book on Greek Myths for a primary school child. The illustrations, the family trees, the stories - I remember most Greek myths because we had this when we were little. My children are the same.

The Usborne illustrated Greek myths is gorgeous

There’s also a great Nat Geo Kids podcast on Greek Myths - Greeking Out - my kids love it.

Another vote for d'Aulaires. I read this in primary school.

Mythology is not really for children (it is violent and there are a lot of adult themes) but d'Aulaires does a good job of skimming over the shocking bits. It is age-appropriate.
Percy Jackson books are fun but take a lot of poetic license so it's useful to know the basics before you read them.

Mine also loved Atticus the storyteller.

Have a look at Maz Evans series ‘Who let the gods out’ if you think he’d enjoy a fictional series. It’s really funny. Probably better suited to year 5/6 children, but he might enjoy you reading it to him. The audio book is also excellent - narrated by the author. Mine loved listening to it on car journeys.

Thank you all so much, I'll definitely be having a proper look at these and order some!

We loved ‘who let the gods out?’though my dd was slightly older (9/10?) and it led to lots of discussion about all the myths and where it all fits in.

Whattheladybird · 13/02/2023 17:27

Who let the Gods out is excellent. But (spoiler alert) there is a significant death later in the series that is very sad. Had my then 9 year old in many many years. Well, me too to be honest!

We have Anthony Horowitz's myths and legends which is brilliant. So much detail and also includes Norse, Inca, Celtic and some Asian myths. It doesn't hold back on the gore, so be warned! My DS7 really likes it.

Tales of the Greek Heroes by Roger Lancelyn Green is an absolute classic. I read it about a million times as a kid.

BlueChampagne · 14/02/2023 10:13

Second the Usborne one.
Also the Beasts of Olympus series.

SquitMcJit · 14/02/2023 10:32

The Marcia Williams ones are really good.

cartoon/ graphic novel style. She also does the Illiad and the Odyssey too. If you wanted something he can read himself alongside some of these other good suggestions.

There is a great children's book by Jean Menzies published by Dorling Kindersley. Called Greek Myths. It is very clearly laid out and the illustrations are great. It helpfually has a pronuncation guide and a glossary at the back.

In the same series there is a Norse Books myths written by Matt Ralphs.

Both beautiful books.

This is not just Greek, but I had an illustrated book called 'Favourite Stories From Around the World' when I was little and I thought it was amazing - I ended up tracking down a second-hand copy as an adult and re-buying it. There's quite a lot of Greek mythology but also Roman and Norse stuff in there.
