My DS10 is just finishing the final book and has throroughly enjoyed reading them independently. I love that he has a love of reading and want to start him on something else, any recommendations? He has previously read the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books.

My DS got Percy Jackson and Artemis Fowl books this Christmas and seems delighted with them!!

all the diana wynne jones books are brilliant, but for those who liked Harry Potter, the Crestomancy series is best. The series dots back and forth through time so you don't have to read them in strict order, Charmed Life is a good one to start with but Witch Week is the one most resonant to HP fans.

Thank you for your suggestions @Liskee and @FeinCuroxiVooz . Much appreciated x

My 9yo is currently very into the Alex Rider books - James Bond-y!

My 9yo ds is currently reading and loving The Keeper of the Lost Cities series by Shannon Messenger. The tenth and final book will be out later this year.

Divergent series
Noughts & Crosses
Hunger Games

Alex Rider, Artemis Fowl, Charlie Bone (also a magical boarding school). Maybe Wolf Boy, although it's quite different. Definitely try Chrestomanci.

The House on Falling Star Hill was one of my favourites growing up.

(Somebody might say the Cherub series, but I'd be a bit careful with that — it gets quite grown up quite quickly. It's also quite of it's time. So is Alex Rider, but maybe not quite as much — they were written to really appeal to teens in about 2000-2005ish so a lot of the tech mentioned was cutting edge then, but really dates it now!)

Definitely Percy Jackson.
Very similar format to HP but (I think) better written and less waffly

Another vote for Percy Jackson. My DS9 just finished the last HP, started the first PJ the night before last and finished it this morning. He was absolutely gripped!

A Wizard of Earthsea

The Spooks Apprentice by Joseph Delaney.

I love this set of books so much!

The Percy Jackson books are a good shout, as is the Morrigan Crow series (which is absolutely age suitable but I still adored as an adult reader), Amari and The Night Brothers, the Five Kingdoms series by Brandon Mull.

For something slightly more mature but still very much on theme- The Divergent series, Hunger Games, Golden compass series by Philip Pullman, Inkheart by Cornelia Funke, Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K Le guin, Eragon series by Christopher Paolini.

Small PSA that if anyone is in the market for the set of Percy Jackson books, The Works are selling the 5 book set for £10 at the moment.
