Recommendations for good, educational comics for the DSs ( 8 & 5) ?

Our two boys used to both get a monthly comic/kids magazine, but the subscriptions have lapsed, and I want to get them something different.

DS1 would probably like the National Geographic one, or something suitably 'fact-based'. We had a one-off copy of a DK (Dorland Kindersley) one from an airport which he really liked, but I can't remember what it's called, or find it again?

DS2 was enjoying the BBC Magic Key comic until they stopped producing it last year and the one they replaced it with was rubbish - very TV character based.

So - any suggestions??

DD (nearly 7) enjoys NG Kids magazine. You can get it on subscription which makes it slightly better value.

Aquila

My 6 year old has "Match". Not, on first glance, educational(!) but it had done absolute wonders for his reading and his maths. He reads it cover to cover, does lots of working out of numbers of goals and things like that, enters every competitions, writes letters to the letters page.....Oh, and he now know the flag of every football playing nation in the world! I find, I'm afraid that most of the "educational" ones are trying just a bit too hard to be educational, if you see what I mean - and, certainly in this family are inclined to languish unread.

Dd had Aquila - but now she's 12 she's swapped to Mizz

We have a stash of Aquilas that get read & re-read & lazily I am relying on those instead of renewing the subscription. As they are timeless, really - partly the result of the thematic principle - each issue has a different core subject.

ds (9 in April) was given NG Kids for Christmas, and it's fine, but it's rather the US concept of what's age-appropriate for 7-11s - ie, very simple & not subtle, lots of pictures & not a whole lot of text of any depth. So it depends on what your ds likes - mine does love it, but I think he'd actually enjoy the adult NG more.

What he does love, & pores over for some hours, & is surprisingly well done, is First News.

There's also something called "CY" which the children have occasionally brought home from school promotional issues of. I think it's trying to be a groovy street-y Aquila.

I can't help with ideas for your younger ds - I think we hadn't discovered magazines when he was that age.

marialuisa, what is the NG kids magazine?? My MIL got a subscription for NG for my 9 year old but it's obviously WAY over his head. Would be interested in getting the kids version though.

This one, he looked at all the pictures looking for naked bums.... sigh.
