spy books for a 7 year old boy too young for Young Bond/Charlie Higson

any tips? my godson is nuts about Bond (turned up to a family gathering in a tux and bow-tie, not unusual apparently) but we need something which is not too disturbing, and gadget focused - apparently he loved the recent Science Museum exhibition about spies...

trusting MN book enthusiasts to put me on the right path..

What about the Alex Rider stuff? might be a bit old...

S1ur · 29/01/2008 19:33

Oooh Artemis Fowl for younger readers

marina · 29/01/2008 19:33

Spy Dog by Andrew Cope is good
Also
Grk by Joshua Doder
The Diamond Brothers series by Anthony Horowitz
And, at a pinch if he is a good reader, Artemis Fowler
Oh and Buster Baylis

there's a Spy guide (non fiction) that I saw the other day that I had as a child . Will see if I can find it.

S1ur · 29/01/2008 19:36

here you go

A bunch of toys/gadgets/books

yurt1 · 29/01/2008 19:37

We have spydog for ds2 (aged 6)

He also bought a book about spys at school- which bang up to date mentioned the guy killed by radiation in London recently! Put him off being a spy!

foxinsocks · 29/01/2008 19:38

here

It's also on the Book People (that's where I saw it I think) for something like £2.99. I'm tempted to get it out of nostalgia. Had many a day following its undercover advice and writing notes in secret ink (aka lemon juice) etc. etc.

foxinsocks · 29/01/2008 19:40

on the book people

marina · 29/01/2008 19:44

Ds has that and loves it Foxy

foxinsocks · 29/01/2008 20:44

aaah you see, not only does he like the same TV programmes as me, he likes the same books too . Perhaps you have a budding accountant/auditor in the making marina .

marina · 29/01/2008 20:58

He is proving alarmingly good at maths, to the extent that we are wondering about DNA testing

time4tea · 29/01/2008 22:01

sensational... thank you

are there any girl spies? my dd is intrigued by Ruby Redfort, the fictional spy who appears in the Clarice Bean books. If there are any 'real-life' Ruby Redfort equivalent books, she'd love to read them

marina · 30/01/2008 14:05

There is one, but really unhelpfully I cannot remember her name
I have to be honest and say she doesn't look a patch on Ruby Redfort - I keep hoping Lauren Child might do the decent thing and write some Ruby stories after tantalising us with them

Mark Haddon's Agent Z series - oddly under-promoted - very silly & ds's very favourite re-read

There was something with a robot rat he had once ... hang on will go and search ... no, can't find it. It was very gadgetty - but actually I think it might've been a bit old for him, so prob not what you're looking for. Will check at home again though & revert if relevant.

While searching, something popped up called Harriet the Spy, which is not really the kind of thematic series with girl spies requested, but looks rather promising just as a Good Book.

What about Jack Stalwart series by Elizabeth Singer-Hunt - think they're quite 'secret agent'-ish

The Korski Code (2-Power) by Pete Johnson
