Did anyone read these books? I think there were four books, one for each season.

The reading age was around 10 years. They were probably written in the 80s, maybe the early nineties at the latest. They were about an old house that some family members (grandparents or great aunt and uncle) lived in, and either two or four children stayed there and mysterious things happened.
The only part I can really remember is an owl coming down the chimney.
They weren't strongly focussed on magic, but there was a supernatural element to them.
I have a feeling there were four books in the series and there was one for each season, such as "Winter in..." and then the name of the house, such as something hall.
Argh! I'm having trouble explaining.

Green Knowe?

GiveYourHeadAWobble · 01/11/2022 20:16

I did wonder about Green Knowe. Does an owl come down the chimney in those books? That's the one thing I definitely remember!

The World's End books by Monica Dickens?

Could it be the magicians house quartet by William Corlett? Although I don’t remember an owl coming down the chimney in it.

This sounds really familiar and I think it might be it. I'm going to have to read the books to find out, though! You might have solved a 30-year-old mystery, as I've always thought about these books since I read them, but got them from the library when I was a child and couldn't remember what they were!

The Owl Service by Alan Garner?

Sorry, I re-read your OP and definitely not!

possibly the children of cherry tree farm by Enid blyton? Definitely four children who stayed with uncle and aunt on their farm and their was a real focus on seasons

I was going to suggest the Magicians House quartet - glad to see someone got there first! I've seen a copy of The Steps Up the Chimney with an owl on the cover, but don't remember the story in too much detail.

I have read that and it's not that one. I should probably have said it's not an Enid Blyton book!

Yes, after reading through on Wiki I definitely think it's this one! I've ordered the first book already and I'm really looking forward to reading it and finding out if it is actually the book I was thinking of because I've never forgotten the magic of those books.

Just to update, it IS the Magician's House Quartet! I'm reading The Steps Up The Chimney now, and really enjoying it. To anyone who fancies rereading it it's lovely to reread at this time of year as it's set in December and the author does a really good job of getting the atmosphere of the depths of winter...
It's really nostalgic to reread this. Thanks to everyone who replied.
