Recommendations for 6 year old - advanced reader

My 6 year old son is quite advanced for his reading. He is currently working his way though the Roald Dahl collection, so can handle books similar to these.

He has just finished the Wigglesbottom Primary School collection by Pamela Butchart/Becka Moor and he would really like another book series that are similar to these books.

Could anybody recommend anything for him to read?

Thanks

I forgot to say, we go to the school library every morning before class and we regularly get books out from our local library.

Normal day, he will read school book, a reading for pleasure book and then a quick story before bed.

Claude books by Alex Smith, Jeremy Strong books, Oliver moon series, mr Majeika series, colour versions of famous five/wishing chair/faraway tree, 13 story treehouse series, the cat and the king, some of the Dick King-Smith books. I was in "the Works" yesterday and they've got loads of box sets for really good prices: the first 10 Famous Five stories, the Worst Witch, the Magic Faraway Tree collection, plus loads more.

In the same situation, a few years ago, we bought the Young Puffin modern classics set. It led to authors we hadn’t heard of, and there isn’t a bad one in there. I’d really recommend it as a good starting point.

Anything by Jeremy Strong.

My 7yo sounds slightly behind him- reading roald Dahl similarly but not getting through as much. He is also getting into famous five and asterix- I know they are graphic books (novels seems a stretch) but he loves them! He loved all the my naughty little sister books as well, age wise they might appeal. We are reading Charlottes web as well and I think he’s ready for the lion the witch and the wardrobe, and maybe the first Harry potter.

SkankingWombat · 04/11/2022 13:30

My 6yo is currently enjoying the Mr Penguin series. Before that we had a Dogman/Cat Kid obsession going on, but be warned they are a one-sitting kind of book for a keen reader! Another huge hit recently has been the Chris Mould illustrated version of The Iron Man.

Thanks everyone, really great suggestions, some I’ve never heard of but look like they could be suitable.

He is reading a book by Jeremy Strong - the hundred mile an hour dog.

The Paddington chapter were very popular in our house, also Olga da Pollga stories which were also written by Michael Bond.

boo1507 · 08/01/2023 07:53

We’ve read many of these and it sounds like similar age/interests.

My DS also enjoyed:
Hotel Flamingo
Supercat by Jeanne Wills
Rainbow Grey
Sam Wu is Not Scared of Series
Worlds worst series by David Walliams
Secret Explorers
Real Pigeons
Investigators
