What age group are Enid Blyton's 'Naughtiest Girl' books aimed at?

I've just bought 'Heidi' and 'The Naughtiest Girl in the school'/'The Naughtiest Girl Again' as audio books for DD1. She's 5. I'm guessing that Heidi's going to be all right for her right away but I wonder whether I should wait a while for the Enid Blyton ones - are they for slightly older children perhaps?

I'd say keep the Naughiest Girl ones til she's a bit older. My DD enjoyed reading St Clares and Malory Towers series from 8 - 9, but that was reading herself. I think the stories are a little old for a 5 year old, but she'll love them when she gets to them in a few years.

I started reading the naughtiest girl to dd2 (5) three days ago - she is utterly gripped! I dont think she really gets the concept of fining and school meetings but I have tried to explain it to her

she LOVES them and cant believe how naughty elizabeth allen is although clearly adores her

dd1 (8) wasnt that gripped - she prefers erik the viking!

I just think it's a shame for children not to "get" the whole book when there are plenty of other books out there for that age group. Re-reading a book never has quite the same impact as reading it for the first time. I adored the boarding school books myself, as did DD. I used to go there in my head and live in the book IYSWIM. I'm sure your DD is gripped Enid, but just wonder if she'd get more out of them later when she can get the whole thing??

TheHonEnid · 28/01/2008 22:45

maybe
still its not like I'm ruining great literature, there's plenty more stuff she can read when she's 8!

Quattrocento · 28/01/2008 22:46

PROBABLY THE GROUP OF RACIST SEXIST WANNABES

TheHonEnid · 28/01/2008 22:46

all kids are differnt anyway

my 8 year old didnt enjoy the books at all

TheHonEnid · 28/01/2008 22:47

lol

harsh but fair

Desiderata · 28/01/2008 22:48

I would say about eight or nine.

And don't listen to Quattro. She's rather predictable.

TheHonEnid · 28/01/2008 22:49

they do beat the boys at tennis though

seeker · 28/01/2008 22:49

I think she's too young for both of them, but if you must, I would have said the other way round - Naughtiest Girl now and wait for Heidi.

Quattrocento · 28/01/2008 22:50

IS THAT BEFORE THEY GO HOME AND MAKE THE TEA? OR IS ONE OF THE BOYS LITTLE BLACK SAMBO?

NOT SHOUTING - CAPS STUCK

TheHonEnid · 28/01/2008 22:51

god what is it with the disapproval?

try her and if she likes them, then hooray

dd2 loved heidi [beginning to wonder if dd2 is super advanced]!

RosaLuxOnTheBrightSideOfLife · 28/01/2008 22:52

DDs1 and 2 enjoyed them at six or so. By eight or nine, St Clare's and Malory Towers tend to be more interesting.

TheHonEnid · 28/01/2008 22:52

i meant disapporoval ovre age

quattro no its just after miss belle and miss best consummate their gay marriage and the music teacher starts taking prozac

Desiderata · 28/01/2008 22:52

Quattro, give it a rest, love.

Quattrocento · 28/01/2008 22:53

ERM DUNNO REALLY. SOMETHING ABOUT ENID BLYTON I THINK. I FEEL THE SAME WAY ABOUT ROTTWEILERS. PERHAPS I SHOULD CHILL OUT?

RosaLuxOnTheBrightSideOfLife · 28/01/2008 22:55

My DD3 is five. I would be more likely to read her Heidi now and leave Naughtiest Girl until she six and wants to read it herself. But that is because I find Heidi more fun to read aloud. Naughtiest Girl is so sanctimonious it makes me feel ill, however it appeals to the six-year-old mind as they are all so judgy at that age.

RosaLuxOnTheBrightSideOfLife · 28/01/2008 22:56

Miss Belle and Miss Best definitely shared more than a late night cocoa in front of the study fire. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that there was Naughtiest Girl fanfic based on that premise.

pointydog · 28/01/2008 23:02

quattro, you have turned bonkers. It is quite fun

TheHonEnid · 28/01/2008 23:07

I miss out some of the really judgey bits

and I watered down the bit when Nora takes the piss out of Elizabeth for putting more than 6 things on her shelf

Quattrocento · 28/01/2008 23:08

I HAVE BEEN VERY PREDICTABLE ACCORDING TO DESI, AND TURNED BONKERS ACCORDING TO POINTY. WISH YOU TWO WOULD GET TOGETHER AND MAKE YOUR MINDS UP.

DO WE THINK THAT ENID BLYTON SHOULD HAVE THE SAME STATUS AS FRUITSHOOTS ON MUMSNET?

seeker · 28/01/2008 23:09

"Miss Buss and Miss Beale
Cupid's darts do not feel
Miss Beal and Miss Buss
How different from us"

Snowstorm · 29/01/2008 19:46

... have just returned to the computer after an absence to find all your messages!!

Think I'll probably keep the Enid Blyton CD a year or two and stop being so lazy and will actually listen to the Heidi once first to guage it for DD1.

Thank you in any case!
