Bill Bryson for DS15?

IWasThere4Aug12 · 21/10/2022 10:24

I've had Bill Bryson recommend to me a few times but not tried any yet. I'm looking for something DS15 and I can read at the same time and wondered if that might work and if so which to start with?

Oh yes, he's hilarious. Start with A walk in the woods or Notes from a small island.

He's fine - a bit dated perhaps, so DS might not 'get' some of the references etc. But still entertaining enough

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 21/10/2022 10:36

I haven't read those in years, but really enjoyed both when I did, a good shout!!

Anunusualfamily · 21/10/2022 10:36

American summer 1924 or a short history of nearly everything also funny and more of a general read

00100001 · 21/10/2022 10:37

Notes From a Small Island is good a place as any as @elephantseal suggests - it about his time living in Britain and his observations of British life :)

00100001 · 21/10/2022 10:39

seconded for Short History of Nearly Everything - a good 'bathroom reader' if you will.

Also, I'd avoid his more recent stuff. He's turned into a bit of a grumpy old man and his books are more whingey.

One of my male friends at school loved Bill Bryson at that age so I’d say definitely worth a try.

rbe78 · 21/10/2022 11:15

Yes, I read all my Dad's Bill Bryson at that age (or younger) and loved them. Notes from a Small Island is a classic, a Walk in the Woods is interesting and hilarious.

ApocalypseNowt · 21/10/2022 11:23

I love Bill Bryson. I'd suggest Down Under - it's so funny with lots of grisly anecdotes about crocs, sharks & snakes.

IWasThere4Aug12 · 21/10/2022 11:42

Great thanks all sounds like it’s worth a try

A hitchhikers guide to the galaxy?

Northernsoullover · 21/10/2022 11:58

A walk in the woods is my favourite book of all time. I've struggled with his later stuff though.

Coldhandscoldheart · 21/10/2022 11:59

I would say down under I cried laughing, he does physical humour very well. It might follow well from small island though. Walk in the woods maybe a bit more staid

yikesanotherbooboo · 21/10/2022 12:08

My DSes loved Bill Bryson at that age .Neither of them are lovers of fiction . Ben Macintyre and Ben Goldacre also went down well.

Summersdreaming · 21/10/2022 12:15

He might enjoy Jeremy Clarkson books if he does like Bill Bryson but wants something more recent. Not exactly the same humour but quite funny.

A hitchhikers guide to the galaxy?

That’s a good suggestion. I would also recommend a short history of everything.

Jon Ronson’s books are brilliant too or Terry Pratchett.

Mumsnut · 21/10/2022 12:27

For some reason, I read that as ‘Bill Bryson for PM’.

and I thought: Why not??!!
