Hi my 6 year old DD is a very able reader however still likes pictures books. Doesn’t like chapter books. I wanted advice for what to get her to read . I would prefer longer picture books.
also need advice on how to move her on to chapter books.
she has read the hairy mclary, Julia Donaldson, dr Seuss,
May the moment she is enjoying a big box set of mr men and little miss books but I am wondering what next.
she has also recently got into dinosaurs and rejecting princess and kitten themes.

thanks.

@User14379 DD did the hopping from book to book thing after few chapters for ages. She's gradually got much better, I think because her reading stamina now better matches her ambition. For her, getting her to finish books involved getting easier books, the Sally Rippin or Princess in Black books would be good for that or book banded books out the library. The Isadora Moon and Claude books DD are a bit longer and harder than those, and I'd say the Winnie chapter books as harder again as the vocabulary is trickier.

She still seemed to enjoy the chapters she did read, but it was a bit frustrating when I'd carefully hunted down books for her! If I'd had time to do it more often for longer (I have a younger DC who is a handful), I wonder whether sitting down with her to take it in turns to read pages would have helped with getting her to finish more.

The Hotel Flamingo books are great and beautifully illustrated. My 7 year old also loves the Magic Faraway Tree séries and the Secret Seven books if that helps!

Thank you so much everyone. I appreciate all the suggestions. @CrabbyCat I do feel guilty at times as she wants to read to me but with a baby I find it difficult to give her my full attention for long.
I got her loads and loads of banded books and she loved those but now just whizzes past those.

I will look for the Claude books and isadora moon. Hadnt heard of princess in black either so will search for that. She doesn’t like princesses atm though

Fairy Mummy series by Sophie Kinsella and the Horrid Henry books are good for this age group

@User14379 may be daft question, but have you gone up the book bands - white and lime have chapters and take DD a little bit longer... As well as the officially book banded reading book series our library has some levelled series. Some to look for would be Blue or Red Bananas, there's also Race Ahead with Reading and Race Further with Reading, and Bloomsbury Young Readers.

I've also just remembered DD also likes a series called Unipiggle which is at the Isadora Moon.

It is hard when you have a younger one, I don't get the time she wants and I would like to do crafts with DD either.

My eldest preferred picture books for a long time, I think he was 7 and a half before he read a chapter book willingly, then he flipped between the two for a while. Now he reads every night to himself, and quite often can be found reading during the day.

My youngest has made the switch a bit younger but will still choose picture books at times. They like them for comfort I think.

Chapter books that have been popular here were Isadora moon, diary if a wimpy kid (literally flipped a switch in my youngest!), Beast Quest, Magic Faraway Tree, Ottoline, Tom Fletcher books, David Williams and 13 storey tree house
