I remember the secret faraway tree, etc - have been looking forward to reading them to dd. She is 4 now - so you think that's old enough to appreciate non-picture books?

taffy - i think it depends on the kid. DD1 has always been very into books, almost since she could sit up by herself and as we live abroad we play a lot of story tapes to her so she hears English from other sources than just us. She also enjoys listening to the 'My naughty little sister' stories etc on the BBC radio website. I think it's important that children learn to listen to stories, it teaches all sorts of other skills. Also, it just feels like we're ready to move on from lots of pictures and little text to more text and less pictures.

Rosa - I second Ramona the Pest, Ramona and Beezus etc. Had kept from when I was little. So fresh and unpatronising.
