What are you reading to your 5yo boy?

DS is nearly 5 and is ready to move on to paperbacks with more words and less pictures. Roald Dahl level is ideal but he’s too sensitive for most of those atm. What are you enjoying? Funny is definitely a bonus but he’s quite mature and can appreciate relatively deep emotions. Thanks all!

The Rabbit and Bear books are lovely-they we're the first books my son read independently and he found the very funny. There were three, but I think a fourth May have been added now.

CaptainBeakyandhisband · 19/07/2022 11:49

Have you looked at the Rabbit & Bear books? My year 1 child also loves Flat Stanley, we have them all and he frequently requests them (much to my chagrin as they are badly written)

CaptainBeakyandhisband · 19/07/2022 11:49

@Wallabyone snap!

CaptainBeakyandhisband · 19/07/2022 11:51

But also on the topic of Roald Dahl, there are some that would suit - The Giraffe, The Pelly & Me; The Enormous Crocodile (sometimes read at school in y1); Esio Trot (just ignore that Mr Hoppy is a creep).

“The day Louis got eaten” is the best children’s book ever

Veetavix · 19/07/2022 15:55

He liked The Twits.

Veetavix · 19/07/2022 15:56

Also, The Magic Faraway Tree, The Enchanted Forest and the first Famous Five book.

Also, The Magic Faraway Tree, The Enchanted Forest and the first Famous Five book.

Just here to second this - my 5 year old DS loved the Faraway Tree series!

Onesundaymorning · 19/07/2022 15:59

Alan Ahlberg- The man who wore all his clothes

Roald Dahl - The magic finger

Alan Ahlberg- Woof

These three have been a hit with my son. He is quite sensitive and likes humorous stories.

Onesundaymorning · 19/07/2022 16:01

Also, Zippel the Little Key hole ghost. This is a story in translation with illustrations by Axel Sheffler.

barneymcgroo · 19/07/2022 16:02

The Claude books by Alex T Smith are lovely, and funny.

KateTheShrew · 19/07/2022 16:03

The 'King Edwin Flashypants' books by Andy Riley are funny and very silly -- my five year old loves them (not remotely deep though). He's also enjoyed a couple of the 'Mr Penguin' series by Alex T. Smith.

ZimZamZoom · 19/07/2022 16:07

We are really enjoying the Hotel Flamingo books by Alex Milway. There's 4 at the moment.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 19/07/2022 16:15

The Wishing Chair
Claude the dog
Mudpuddle Farm
Paddington Bear
Mr Penguin

Elevenerifebruv · 19/07/2022 16:36

We're reading classic fairytales. I'm not sure they are less scary than Roald Dahl, but shorter and easier to follow.

MikiSu · 19/07/2022 19:01

The how to train your dragon series is great for boys

OhThatChicken · 19/07/2022 22:22

My DS loves the Pirate Blunderbeard books - there are four and they are chapter books and quite decent sized paperbacks but with lots of illlustrations and emojis. We started out reading them together when he was 5 but now he likes to reread them on his own and still cackles at the jokes. In fact my username is based on the main character's catchphrase.

This thread is fab because we've been looking for something new and fun for him to get his teeth into.

DiscoBadgers · 19/07/2022 22:25

Rabbit and bear here too

Nat6999 · 19/07/2022 22:34

Have you looked at Humphrey the Hamster? Ds loved that age 5.

PragmaticWench · 19/07/2022 22:45

Zoe's Rescue Zoo series is great, lots of animals and always a not-too-terrible problem to resolve in each book. Gentle but fun.

Dertie Bertie also went down well here.

Magnicarta · 21/07/2022 15:49

Thanks all, looking forward to trying those!

All of the Super Happy Magic Forest books. They're hilarious!
We're reading Grimwood currently. That's another very funny one.

soundsystem · 10/08/2022 00:32

Claude and Paddington popular here too, and also the Oliver Moon series.

My 5yo also really enjoyed the Phillip Pullman Scarecrow one that I was reading to his older sister.

The Train Mouse was also a big hit, as was A Mouse Called Mika (he's not particularly into mice or anything!)

birdglasspen · 07/10/2022 17:10

Hmmm, my 5yr old is obsessed with fighting, war, starwars anything with weapons. No idea why as far from my interests as possible! However, we read a lot and these are my suggestions! We did the whole bear grylls adventure series, about bear and a child surviving in desert/artic/jungle etc. just discovered John Fardell mentioned here “ the day Louis was eaten” there is also some older books which I’ve just started reading to 5 yr old they are good! His other picture books are great too! Son loved pippa longstocking. We also buy ladybird or usbourne classics such as treasure island, Robinson Crusoe, around the world in 80 days, kidnapped. Daisy books! Really annoying but can be so funny …daisy and the burglars especially! We’ve done roald Dahl minus the witches! Also books about his interests so there are ones about a boy in ww1 and Jacobite times…maybe by floris books I think.
