Books/series to read aloud to my 8-year old?

For context DS is 8, Y3, massively struggles to read and is nowhere near the point of being able to do it for fun (FINALLY been referred for assessment after over a year of the school wafting away my concerns and telling me he will 'catch up')

Anyway. The good thing is that he still very much enjoys stories, books and being read to and I am obviously keen to keep this up as long possible.
We are currently reading and enjoying Narnia; he has also loved books of myths/folktales, and is into science, nature, reptiles and dragons in a big way😁

So, looking for suggestions of books or series that might encompass any of the above interests, with big bonus points for anything that is reasonably enjoyable for an adult to read out loud too!

Thank you!

I'm quite fussy about what I read to DS(8) at bedtime, as in I like it to be well enough written to be a pleasure for me to read as well as a gripping story for us both, and pitched right vocabulary/comprehension for him to keep up but also be challenged. Narnia, Roald Dahl and Enid Blyton have all hit the spot for us and we've just finished the first Harry Potter (though I've not told him there are more books so will probably leave it a while before reading the rest). I also loved reading The Christmasaurus aloud, and Tom Fletcher has a few other books now which might be good. DS listens to lots of audiobooks as well (on a Yoto player, but we use the Borrowbox library service to access lots of different books) so I tend to use that for books that I know he will enjoy but that I'm not so keen to read! He's definitely enjoyed 'The Boy who Grew Dragons' series, and the Bear Grylls books.

Enid Blyton adventure series
Alex Rider
How to train your dragon series
Boy at the back of the class
Bear Grylls series
Stealth - access denied
Michael Morpurgo - Adolphus tips (and lots of others)

Another vote for the earlier Harry Potter books. We also loved

Podkin One-Ear series
Nowhere Emporium series

My son didn’t enjoy Land of Roar but I know it is very popular.

My DS is 7 and was also a reluctant reader, but adores stories. We’re enjoying Harry Potter (book 4, will prob wait a bit before the next lot of the series). He also enjoyed Greta and the Ghost Hunters and The Great Dream Robbery as stand alones. The Knife series are good (fairies), Redwall, Animal Ark, The worst witch. Roald Dahl books and The Edge Chronicles. We've begun the Alex Ryder series and he’s enjoyed Stormbreaker, but he hasn’t been drawn to Artemis Fowl yet. The Whitby Witches by Robin Jarvis is a good series too, very steeped in folklore. I also agree with Terry Pratchett - always a good read!

Also, we’ve only just cracked the reading alone with graphic novels. Dogman is a hit! Also investiGATORS and the Hilda series. I allow staying up in bed to read with a book light and broke the ‘no video games’ rule in our house to allow the reading eggs app a few mornings a week, which has also helped. I don’t know if any of that is helpful, you may have done all that, but it gradually helped us. I was surprised at the struggles with reading as I’m an avid reader and have always read with ds, so didn’t expect it. He hasn’t been referred anywhere, but just found it exhausting and struggled in confidence, which graphic novels are really helping with. I even found him reading to himself after school the other day, unheard of! I was so chuffed!

Hope you both enjoy some new series together! I think we might try Percy Jackson next.

Oh and The boy who grew dragons series! DS just reminded me!

Definitely Harry Potter!
Also 'How to Train your Dragon'
'Puzzles & Punchlines' for something a little lighter

WhisperTree · 03/08/2023 16:44

Try Frostheart, if your child might prefer a pacy adventure

MumVUnicorns · 03/08/2023 16:59

The Storey Tree House books are very popular at our school through years 1 onwards, they really encourage reading by self and together.

Harry Potter is the next set we are moving onto!

Look for any of the books by Ross MacKenzie, The Nowhere Emporium series, or Evernight.

My 8 year old loved anything by Katherine Rundell as well.

Sorry, haven't read the full thread but I don't know if anyone's mentioned the Knight Sir Louis books? They are extremely silly but in a good way, and my kids adored them! If you have Audible I think the first two were on the unlimited thing on there - the audio versions are read by one of the authors and are very good, as they do a LOT of accents and daft sound effects - if you read them yourself it might be a bit more tiring 😁

Mr Gum. We love Mr Gum, and if you get the audio books, get the ones read by the author, not the ones read by Kate Winslet (her version is too screechy).

Mr Gum books are brilliant and we have spent many many a hiday just listening to the audio books while driving round. Dh often had them on while driving to work!

Seconded, absolutely brilliant- DD and I used to laugh so much we couldn't carry on reading.

Maggiesgirl · 03/08/2023 17:09

Oh and the Beast Quest series.

ginny93 · 03/08/2023 17:22

Lots of good suggestions here. There's the Roman Mysteries series - set in Ancient Rome which might fit in well with the mythology interest?

persisted · 03/08/2023 17:54

The Redwall books, Brian Jacques
Greek legends, there are some wonderful versions of The Odyssey.
